Samuel L Jackson and Harrison Ford go back and forth on the overall grossing movies, they have to head the list.

Gene Hackman is freaking great. He can play any role believably. He can be a complete nerd or the toughest, baddest man on the planet and both are believable.

How about John Candy, John Belushi, Walter Matthau, Jack Lemon, David Bowie, Paul Walker, Gene Wilder, or Leslie Nielson?

but for the living, maybe Cary Elwes, Patrick Stewart, Elijah Wood.

I concur that Freeman is boring.

All of those guys are dead, not necessarily good actors. I mean really, John Candy is probably about the same level as Walker, just happened to make some funny movies.
