Wait wait wait wait wait... are you trying to say that an owner FIRED his head coach because he was going to be TOO good???? Really?!

He went 5-11 his last year in Cleveland. Talk about a SB contender!!! I just looked it up. The move was announced in the middle of the season and became official before he got fired. He went 36-44 as their coach.

My point is for coaching, just like playing, the situation and circumstance is just as important as ability. There is a right time and place. Would Tom Brady be Tom Brady if he was drafted by the Browns? More topical, would Ezekiel Eilliot be a ROY candidate if he was drafted by the 49ers? You can never really know.

Just because Mularkey was fired in the past, doesn't mean he can't be a great coach given the right situation.

Watch the 30 for 30 documentary on Belichick and the Browns. I'm not saying the Browns would have been what the Patriots have been for the last 15+ years but there were definite handcuffs put on the possible success of Belichick. They were 11-5 in 94' and in the playoffs for the first time since 89'.

The announcement of the move and Modell's plan to move may not match up. I'm not really sure when he decided he wanted to move. I think that announcement also had something to do with the team's lack of success in 95'.

I don't think he fired him for being "too good". I think he fired him partly because he knew Moddell purposely didn't give him all the players he wanted and that was going to be a problem moving forward after the relocation. Can't keep a guy the doesn't trust the ownership more so when it is justified.

I do agree with your timing piece. We may be able to argue that if the expansion Browns were able to hire Belichick, they may not be the complete dumpster fire they are.

MM8 isn't half the player, either.

Give me the cheater in this one.

And it's really simply not fair to MM8 to compare him to the greatest of all time. Let's start small and ask if he can even be the next Cam Newton, or Ben Ruthlessraper, etc.

Right now, I'd be happy for him to be good enough to end any debate that he's better than McNair. Soon we can argue if he's better than Moon for the franchise's best ever QB.
