Well, a lot of people think Kirkpatrick and Gillmore are tier 1 guys and Ryans is tier 2. Hence me picking a guy who I think is tier 1 (Bouye and steal him from a division rival) and tier 2 (Ryans).

With so many teams needing cb's, I doubt Gilmore and Fitz have to play on prove it deals unless they are stupid. It will be VERY interesting to see what guys coming off down years (Gilmore, Fitz, Johnson) ask for and accept compared to lesser players (Logan Ryans). Even Bouye is a tad gamble considering his previous pedigree and lack of experience.Trumaine Johnson is a good example of what can happen when you expect a lot off 1 good year when he wasn't even the number one CB on his team. Johnson had a big year in 2015. Not a good year this year!

Leary is the same type of issue. Not a lot of starting experience, but Dallas didn't miss a beat when he filled in. Due to his lack of experience and starts, I don't think he'll break the bank and get as much as Zeitser. I think either is an upgrade and at worst, gives us an upgrade with Kline or Spain as quality depth!

We have a ton of money. We don't have a lot of wholes so going to sign a bunch of mediocre players (aka Cox, Blake, McCain, etc) is not what we need. We need some serious talent. I'd rather sign 4 above average - great players than get 8 average ones.

Why? What else are we gonna sign $70 mil on? And if you look at it like this...when you spend $12mil on Bouye vs $7mil on McCourty, its only $5mil more but since the $7mil is McCourty's cap number and Bouye would be signed to a long term deal, we could front load his contract so when we have to pay Lewan and Mariota, his cap hit is less and it makes it more attractive for the free agent who gets more money in the first few years!

Bouye is also younger than Jenkins and more likely to play out this contract. If we sign someone like Berry, we will back load his contract because he probably doesn't play it all out.

And what else are we gonna spend all this money on? We no longer need a bunch of solid players to fill gaps, we need good-great talent. While expensive, we have the cap to pay for it.

Just saying that has never been the method of operation for this franchise and I doubt it happens now.

I'd be happy to get Bouye and release McCourty. What I don't see is getting Bouye and Eric Berry. And I don't see taking a first round draft pick and sitting him on the bench.

Lewan was 11th overall and intended to sit his entire rookie season

Decisions are not made in a vacuum.

You cannot manage the cap year to year like that. We have a lot of room this year but need to be ready for following years.

In 2018 we have some big contract coming up and we have to be ready for the huge increase Mariota will get.

You also are not accounting for the fact that most teams have a lot of cap space which means there will be a lot of competition for free agents.

Our dbs are so terrible and have cost us so many games over the past few years, we should be very willing to throw 35m and 2 draft picks at this group. Cutting mccourty, searcy and douglas will free up about 15m more in cap space too. So just say we have to throw 13m at berry, 15m at a #1 cb and 8m at a #2 cb, that's 36m and our dbs would be dramatically better. We'd still be left with 49m to spend on other positions.

Yes, I know. I am not suggesting we actually spend $70mil this offseason, but it'd be a good idea to get some big time players and front load the contracts of the young guys so it'll save us cap space when we do have Mariota and others to pay.

I do know that other teams have money too! Lol

Which is also why having a bunch of below avg players making 3-7mill/yr is a poor use of our cap space!!!

So with that cap space, can someone pull up the cap number that we HAVE to spend per NFL rules?

Agreed. But I think JRob sees we got mixed results grabbing mid-low tier free agents. Spence was fine. Secondary was pretty bad but our two og's we're solid.

We are at a stage where just patching holes isn't the goal. With a full year of tape in these systems he can see what has worked and what has not. But just getting more avg talent isn't gonna get us over the hump and not make this team ready to compete for a SB win!

Gonna have to make some tough free agency decisions and same with the draft.arguably our 2nd round did nothing for us in 2016. We don't have that luxury anymore.

I think KC will franchise Berry again and try to sign Poe long term. But if he were available, 50/50 if we'd go after him. CB is the biggest priority. While there are a bunch of good ones in the draft, we need 2-3 and are currently deficient. If we fix CB, we can be ok with Byard and anyone of our avg Ss. We can't upgrade S and get by with what we have at CB!
