After 3 games, Marcus does appear to be staring down 1 receiver, then either passing to him or trying to run. This was not a problem I saw last season, so maybe it's Mularkey's way of simplifying our offense. Not a huge deal for an elite-level receiver, but our receivers, other than Walker and Wright, can't get open with any consistency. End result - an offense that is gonna struggle a lot in the passing game. A bright spot appears to be Jace Amaro; we'll see if he has a more expanded role in the next game; hope so. No question we need to upgrade at WR; we got a good possession receiver in Sharpe in the draft. We'll see how Wright fits in if he can stay healthy.
I do like the upgrades on the O'line from last season. Jones > Schwenke/Gallik, Conklin > Bell/Poutasi, and I think Kline will permanently keep Warmack's spot, who well may be done as a Titan. Replacing 3/5 of the O'line in one season ain't easy... Our run game is vastly improved, both RBs and the O'line. A year together this season to gain continuity for next season will speed our growth on offense. Could Spain be replaced next season?
On D, Dodd looks very promising. We still need help at CB, but Byard IMO is gonna be a very good FS; he and Stafford could start next season... Hopefully Big Jon can get us a studly WR and CB with our 2 First round picks in next year's draft. Another CB later, or maybe Reed from this draft will get better quickly. A G/T would be nice too...

I've rewatched every game so far. Mariota is not starring down receivers as often as people keep claiming he is. Its just an easy assunption when the offense is struggling to get open. The one concern I have is the fact that this offense is built around Murray instead of Mariota.

That is because we still do not have the weapons for Mary to throw to. I am not too worried about it at the moment. It is a 3 year build. We will be competing in short order. Most likely some big steps next year and in prime the year after. I can't wait.

Simple solution, stop calling plays that have the QB turn his back to the defense

So you want to remove all play action plays?

Pretty sure on play-action the quarterback has to turn his back to fake the handoff to the runningback. Very first pass on video below.

    Thanks for posting that.

Yeah. He has to turn his back and that means he has to make his reads quickly after the fake. IMO, that can't be an issue for an NFL QB. His targets have to find enough separation and, on many of those plays, they did.

In watching that video, Mariota was solid with most of his throws. He was smart in throwing some away. When he steps into the pass, it has plenty of zip. But I saw him staring down receivers most of the time and going to his first read.

The INT was just stupid. He had no business even attempting that and should have thrown it away. That's the kind of thing he can't do.

I believe in Marcus....We stay the course and build around him...Then fix coaching. This is a process gang, and it is going to take a few years.

I don't think Mariota has an issue running play action. It's the fact that nobody is getting separation when he looks down field. It makes matters worse when 2 to 3 guys are running basically the same route. On top of that you will always have defensive fronts forcing Mariota to stay contained in the pocket making it harder for him to escape pressure. It really just comes down to Mariota putting the ball exactly where it needs to be and at times that's alot to ask for. Especially when the pocket is collapsing. Its still very early into the season. I think we should wait to be concerned until midway through the season to see if our offense is still struggling with this new scheme. I think that's what most ppl overlook. Mariota isn't the only one trying to grasp a new playbook. I guess the trolls didn't take into account Mariota working with 7 new starters this year.
