Byron Bell Out for Season

Anyone thinking twice, go look who's running with the presumed "1's" from today's OTA practice.

67 is Spain. Right next to Lewan 77 and Ben Jones 60. Warmack and bell (76) who was manning the RT spot until Conklin would obviously replace him.

 

So yeah Spain's job to lose

 

How do you figure?

The truth is we don't know who would've been penciled in as the starter at LG because Conklin wasn't running with the 1s and we don't have a backup Tackle.

This just further proves how valuable Bell was because not only was he a potential starter at LG, but our only backup Tackle, huge loss. Now our depth consists of Schwenke, Spain, Poutasi......putrid.

 

Rarely, if ever do rookies get to run with the 1's on day 1. There's a veteran respect from coaches that those things don't happen. You earn your place and it keeps the locker room vibe more respectable.

Bell played RT primarily last season. Spain Had more starts at LG. Yes bell was a loss, BECAUSE backups are needed and swings are even greater but he wasn't going to usurp Spain if they thing he has a legit shot at developing into an every game starter going forward. Reps are paramount

JR has to find quality replacement depth. Not much out there and he'll have to decipher quality in other team cuts.

 

I don't think Bell would have started at LG but his versatility to backup 4 positions across the OL may sorely be missed. You really have to worry about the OT spots now. I don't think Bell backing up Guard is a huge loss because I think any of the other 3 guys we have there are probably about the same skill wise. But who the heck backs up LT/RT now? I legit dont know. Lewan/Conklin need to play 16 games.

 

As to whom do they go after now. Well, the pickings are very slim.

Jamon Meredith is still out there. Given his familiarity with the team it would be wise to at least look into him.
