They gave millions for "good enough" players though. They're picking the "best" from a bad bunch.

But do you see a team with a franchise QB drafting a QB high? That would indicate that the position is a big need...not picking up the best turd floating in the pool.

Most teams are screwed if their starter is out for a few games. Even then they have to be in a good position beforehand.

I never looked at it as mentoring... but having someone with a veteran mentality will be good. Cassell will know what to expect.

Would you rather have Cassell in Mariotas head or Mett?

    THAT'S the difference to me.

    Mentality > Mentor

The #2 QB matters in only two instances.

    1. You're a championship contender. Either you live or die by your QB and you need a quality replacement or you just need a guy that can do an ok job because you have a great surrounding cast and a defense.

    2. You have a young QB and want someone behind him as a mentor and knows the playbook. Someone that won't start trouble.

See, here's the thing. If Mariota went down in the middle of the season and we were maybe .500, or just below, I'm not going to care about QB play or wins. I'll be looking for player development. That season becomes worthless in the grand scheme of things. A team like the Cowboys, needs a good back up. Romo has a thick medical history and they're a championship contender. I don't see the big deal in needing a good back up until we're actual contenders. If our franchise QB goes down, my last thought would be oh boy do I wish we had a better QB behind him so we could maybe win an extra game or two.

Fitzpatrick and Rodgers played all 16 games. Jets missed the playoffs and Steelers made it. Bengals already locked up a playoff spot when McCarron started and he went 2-2. Wins against SF and BAL. So not that impressive.

This post is full of fail.

Assuming Geno would've won the starting job. I'm not so sure about that.

And NYJ still didn't make the playoffs though.

You're kidding yourself if you really believed Geno Smith was going to be their starter.

They were probably glad the dude punched him in the locker room so they wouldn't have to bench him.

The second they signed Fitzpatrick, everyone knew he'd win the job. Geno is horrific.

I don't like Cassell. Since 2014 he has had 8 TDs with 11 picks. Not what you want from a vet backup QB.

A vet backup should give you a passing rating above 80, more Tds than ints and a chance to win most games he starts. This guy is crap. Since 2014 a passing rating of 67. That's practice squad caliber!
