The reason I ask this question is I started thinking about the 49ers trading up in the draft and using Anthony Davis as a piece of the puzzle. Davis has said he is going to un-retire sometime before the season. So if we doesn't un-retire before the draft can the 49ers deal his rights to us???

The Calvin Johnson retirement also had me wondering about the retirement rules. On some show I was watching they said that if Calvin were to decide to un-retire right before the start of the season then the Lions would almost be forced to release him because they would not have the cap space to cover Johnson's big cap number.

So it seems logical to me that if a team is going to be at risk of a player un-retiring and being forced to take on their old contract that they should have the right to trade his rights while he is retired. But I have never heard of a team trading for a retired players rights.

I'd give up a 7th rnder to the Lions for the rights to Calvin Johnson or a 7th to 49ers for the rights to Patrick Willis

Why would you trade a pick for the rights to a player who isn't sure they want to play? I can assure that 7th round pick WANTS to play.

I get that an 80% peak CJ is likely better than a 100% 7th rounder. But there simply is no way to calculate the risk that retirement or decline are going to get you an 80% peak CJ.

This scenario almost played out with Carson Palmer and The Bengals.
Brown was not going to release or trade Palmer so the discussion moved to how long Cincy would be willing to hold a reserve/did not report spot for him indefinitely to keep him from simply abandoning the team and signing with another once his old contract was purged.

These reserve lists are explained here:

Ok, so teams can trade the rights to a retired player....what would you give up to get Anthony Davis??? A punishing, run blocker who has starting experience and is only 26 yrs old.

I agree...honestly I'd love to have the deal in place before the draft because then we could settle for Ramsey or a jackpot type trade
