I guess you can say that The rise and fall of Ziggy stardust was his best work but he had 12-15 best albums in my opinion. No album is better top to bottom than Heroes and Low is comparable and has a special place because it came first. Lodger is an after thought to some people and it is a classic.

How many big time pop stars do an experimental album that is more than half instrumental pieces? Sound and Vision is probably my favorite song and it is practically an instrumental piece.

Station to Station is brilliant, Scary Monsters is brilliant. Earthling is mind blowing good with the drums and guitar and his last great album in my opinion Heathen is insane.

Outside is dark, a bit psycho and full of brilliant songs and musicianship.

Three albums he did before Ziggy are classics. Space Oddity-The man who sold the world-Hunky Dory.

I did not mention one album in my last post. An album that could be grouped with the Ziggy glam period but defies any real categorization. The album is Diamond Dogs.

How many art rock albums are wholly punk in attitude? This one is. It's based on Orwell's 1984 but Bowie did not have permission to use the title. Most of the material based on the book is on the back side. The album begins with the hard hitting title song and then goes into a song about prostitutes called "sweet thing".

It's dark, it's raw, it's edgy. Urban decay, sex in doorways. It is the definition of great rock!

DAVID BOWIE LYRICS - We Are The Dead

    Yet now
We feel that we are papers, choking on you nightly
They tell me "Son, we want you, be elusive, but don't walk far"
For we're breaking in the new boys, deceive your next of kin
For you're dancing where the dogs decay, defecating ecstasy
You're just an ally of the leecher
Locator for the virgin King, but I love you in your ****-me pumps
And your nimble dress that trails
Oh, dress yourself, my urchin one, for I hear them on the rails
Because of all we've seen, because of all we've said
    We are the dead

Bowie was always the pre-punk punk.
He mixed the unmixable Stooges Raw Power record.

He recorded the track Hang on to Yourself five years (lol) before The Ramones would make a career of the Pinhead riff..

The Sex Pistols used to show up at Bowie gigs and tell the venue they were the opening act. At one point when that didn't work so Steve Jones stole a bunch of Bowie's stage gear.

And then there's this profound photo of a teenage Sid Vicious:

How about Ronson's guitar riffs in Aladdin Sane(A lad insane)? That might be the best album for great riffs of alltime!

Cracked actor, Panic in Detroit, Jean Jeanie. This is what rock music is supposed to sound like.

Add Mike Garson's jazz piano and the album is beyond sick.

An interesting anecdote about Garson. After the Hunky Dory album Bowie invited Rich Wakeman to be a regular member of his band. Wakeman had played the piano on the hunky dory album. Wakeman accepted an offer from Yes instead.

Garson an American jazz pianist joined up with Bowie later for the Aladdin Sane gigs and would be his regular session and live keyboard player for the next 40 years.

Some interesting and painful things have come out since the man's death. He apparently left millions in his will to people who worked for him knowing how his music would sell after he died.

He left a million dollars to the nanny who cared for his son back in the 70s.

His son, Zowie Duncan jones is a film director and the director of world of Warcraft coming out this summer. When Duncan(He always hated the name Zowie) found out his girlfriend had breast cancer he promptly married her.

I found out recently that she was pregnant and he told his dad in a Christmas card. Unfortunate he will not see his grandchild born in June.

Edit: In addition he absolutely loved Bali and was something of a practicing buddist. He willed to have his body flown to Bali and cremated there with his ashes scattered there. Bali has that effect on a lot of people.

What is going to happen in the next 12 months and really is already happening is that people who only have a superficial understanding of this man's art will learn more and his greatness will be revealed.

I went through that when i first dabbled in his music. I bought Ziggy stardust and Station to Station around 1999 and became hooked. Next it was Diamond dogs and Aladdin sane and i wanted more. Then the Berlin trilogy and Scary monsters eventually working my way into his incredible music from the 90s.

Each album i bought was my favorite for a time until i bought something else. He made 6 great albums in his 40s and 50s when many artists are dead or retired and washed up.

The only artist i might put in the same class for uncompromising excellence might be Peter Gabriel but Gabriel was not near as prolific. Bowie made twice as many albums in the last 40 years.

You look at the videos for his last album some have 40 million hits already!

Again the greatest rock star of all-time. Not even close.

I typically don't like it when we agree on something.
