I have a pretty decent laptop that's only a year and a half old. 2.9GHZ, 8GB RAM, SSD, Windows 7. The last 2 or 3 days it's all of a sudden been running VERY slowly. Startup and shutdown are much noticeably slower. Apps are lagging and freezing. I have up-to-date anti-virus and malware scanning apps. I've run full system scans with each and they say I'm okay. I still have 32GB of available space so it's not like my HD is close to full. I've tried running disk defrag and it just stalls out in the middle of the process.

Could I have a virus or malware that isn't being detected? Could it be something else? Is there anything else I could try before dropping it off to a professional?

Depending on your files and programs - you could try to do a system Reboot. Sounds like the ram is being maxed out somewhere in the background causing all the slow bs.

My gut says: Use that perty PayPal CC and just buy an Apple MacBook. You know, avoid the drama of open source OS

Honestly, that's the way I'm leaning. I used to be a Mac guy but reverted back to Windows about 3 years ago. There are things I hate about Apple but there's no denying they make great machines and I love the OS. With my Windows computers it just seems like it's always something. I dropped like $800 on this laptop and it's pretty much been issues since day one.

You can do Ctrl+Alt+Delete, go to task manager to see what applications are running in the background or if any. You can take a look at the processes tab in task manager also to see everything that's running. I'll be careful what you choose to "end process" on that tab, but it will give you a glimpse though.

What anti-virus and malware program are you using?

I recently had the exact same thing happen on my work machine. Couldn't figure what the issue was until our IT guy did some deep PI work and found that of all things the darned video card was failing and causing the whole machine to go wonky.
For this machine since I have specific work related software etc. and other things that might cause an issue we opted to replace the card. Considering that this computer is over 5 years old and was failing such in any other instance I would have replaced the whole thing - and probably will this year.
Point being - if you can't resolve the problem with your basic resolution options and if the machine isn't newly purchased - it's probably time to pony up for a new one..

This. Windows gives a warning now and itll tell you before shutting off anything too important.

Then. (Start>search> then type in "msconfig" without the quotations)

Look at the startup tab and see if anything looks off. By "off", i mean any program that starts up that you dont use regularly, virus program, or wondows utility.

Anything that has a blank spot under the command column is a problem most of the time. If you have any questions about anything, ask.

System restore is the easiest fix as long as have a somewhat recent restore point.

Also...as mentioned... what virus/maleware programs do you have installed.

Dont pay a professional. It can be worked out here. Your problem is either memory going out or you have something recently installed onto your computer, possibly inadvertently.

I agree. I glanced on mine before and it had programs running I've never used in over a year. It's a bunch of non-sense stuff if you know what to look for.
