This article explains a lot IMO.....

Why the Titans aren't asking Marcus Mariota to audible much - Tennessee Titans Blog- ESPN

As I watched games this year I often wondered; Why the heck did we just run into a stacked box?? I thought, Man Marcus needs to read that and change the play. After reading this article from PK I am seriously wondering if Marcus has been given the mandate: We call the plays you run what's called.

Earlier in the season I saw Marcus change a few plays from run to pass; and he seemed effective. I get that there are several rookies playing on offense. However, running a play where the box is loaded and the RB has no hope of positive yardage is just stupid.

Maybe Mularkey believes this is the only shot he is going to get; and if it is not going to work it will be because of plays he himself has called. I do not like this at all. I feel like it shows a lack of faith in a QB that although he is a rookie; seems to be growing. Holding him back like this is doing nothing to develop him for the coming years.

Maybe I am reading too much into it. However, I would really like to see Marcus pull us out of bad play selections. The play calling has been bad especially last week IMO. If Marcus sees a reason to change the play; I think you have to give him that freedom.

Watching Andrews run into a blockade of defenders last week made me question Marcus. Now it makes me even more certain I do not have faith in Mularkey to bring along & develop Marcus. I know he wants to win know; and thinks his plays will do that. However, this smells a lot like ego talk from the guy that wants to take this team to the future. If he is not concerned 1st & foremost with developing Marcus; he is not right for this team.......Just my thoughts.

Like you just said there are several rookies in the starting lineup with very little experience. What I got from this article isn't so much on them holding mariota back as it is too just having guys around him that haven't grasped the playbook to that level.

I get that there are several rookies starting/playing. However, if it is such a problem that you feel like you MUST stay in bad play selection; the problem is bigger than playing rookies. This is a huge part of being an offensive player.

I am a believer in getting these young guys reps. They need them badly. However, I do think adjusting to an audible should be something they can handle.

You would think if it is that big of a problem it would be addressed in multiple practices to get it right. Staying in bad play calls because you do not have players that can handle an audible is crazy. I mean you are basically giving up a down because you cannot get players aligned properly. I do not see a lot of games being won by players who are not capable or coached properly to adjust at the LOS.

We just need to get a whole new staff and philosophy, period. I agree, many times I've watched and wonder why didn't he audible out? The Panthers game was the epitome, 1st and 2nd down run up against 9 or 10 upfront. If we're not playing to win, at least make it exciting to watch. It makes me so mad watching or play calling.

I think Marcus is a very smart and good football player and have no doubts of him calling audibles and being accurate in the process. He should be given freedom.

I'm going to intertwine this with the Chip Kelly post. The reason I am is Marcus is a very good, smart and prepared football player. I personally think Kelly's program at Oregon gets some credit for this. Kelly is big on preparation. On what you do through out the week before Saturday or in his case now Sunday. Go fast and hard Tuesday through Friday. Go Fast and hard on Saturday and Sunday. Take care of your body. And Win The Day. I'm sure you've heard Marcus say a time for two "I'm not nervous. Being nervous is a sign of not being prepared". This was a Kelly saying. And there were very few times his team wasn't prepared and ready to go. Kelly and his program has prepared Marcus into being what he is today. A very fine football player. A player that is able to handle all these things and duties like calling audibles and more at the quarterback position. If you need anymore proof about him as a coach. Just go back and look at Marcus.

If there is a 100% buy in from all. Kelly's team will perform like a well oiled machine. They did for four years at the U of O and to an extent two in Philly.

Although John McNulty's comments at the end of the article are somewhat encouraging, this quote by Mularky is just down right scary:
He's basically saying he doesn't believe in adjusting the playcall based on the look the defense is giving.
That's probably the single biggest reason why Brady have been so successful, his ability to adjust to what the defense is showing.

Todays game gave us a perfect example. End of the 3rd quarter, 2&10; a run is called with the entire defense on the line waiting. You can look at the expression on the face of MM8; he KNOWS this play is going NOWHERE. He has been told not to change the play; he does not. We run into a stacked defense for nothing. We give up a down when we are playing from behind.

This is just one example and there are several more to be made. It is absolutely a waste of a down. Our team cannot afford to do that. Hell NO team can afford to do that. Yet our Interim HC says he knows enough about the tendencies of the opposing team to make these calls before we even see the defense on the field?!!! AHHHHH!!! It's insanity to think that from the sidelines you can call the plays & not adjust them to the defense. Brady, Manning, & Rodgers are the type of QBs they are today because they read the defense and adjust the plays.

We watch as plays are wasted. THIS is one of many reasons Mularkey is not qualified to lead this team. I had hopes that he would be the type of coach that would lay his ego to the side. Apparently not. As @Vigsted highlighted; that comment just confirms it.

I think that in the conditions we played in today; Marcus played a great game. He absolutely needs A LOT more help from the run game, WRs, and oline. However, I think he, even as a rookie, has proven to be a quality QB. There are several teams that would LOVE to have this QB leading the offense. Why not trust that he can adjust the offense? And if it is just that the other rookie players cannot handle it; maybe it should be fixed before they start a game.
