Ever wonder why no other team in the NFL tries to run the 2-minute drill for four quarters?

Chip Kelly: It’s on me as a head coach | ProFootballTalk

"In the next few weeks, Kelly and Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie may mutually decide that they’d both be better off going their separate ways. Kelly could go back to coaching in college, and Lurie could find himself a coach and G.M. more suited to the NFL."

    Long Post Warning:

First of all, I am a CK homer so take it for what its worth. While I would be on board with CK as our coach, but not the GM. I would also be very ok Adam Gase, Hue Jackson or McDaniels. They all merit consideration. But here are the things I find odd. I will make my points but won't participate in arguments as I already got the semi-ban on the other site for being a Oregon homer which isn't allowed evidently.

    1. It appears people seem to think CK is mostly failing as a head coach rather what I believe is the real issue, his miserable failure as a GM. The team has quit of him especially defensively(as evidenced by how they were playing earlier this year). CK has a 56% win rate as a coach despite this years record. He took a 4-12 team and went 10-3 twice. This already places him ahead of Spurrier, Saban, and a few other college to pro failures .

CK has had garbage for QB's his entire stint in Philly and it is hard to win without a decent QB. He is the same coach he was 1-2 years ago when he was supposedly a genius. His coaching hasn't changed, but his team has changed as as a reflection of CK the GM. There are coaches in the league right now with a worse record than CK who took over poor teams at similar time and they are not on the hot seat.

    2. People feel that the more CK loses, the ridicule and hatred towards CK goes higher, and feel that there is less chance of him being the Titan coach. I think its the opposite. If CK win yesterday and won out and took the division, he wouldn't be going anywhere. But if he continues to lose, he will be fired soon(probably inevitable at this point anyway). This means he is on the mkt and you can be sure Amy will be taking a look. So in reality, the more fans hate on him as he continues to lose ,the higher the chances he ends up here(modest chance in reality at the moment).

In the end, CK wasn't as good as people thought he was 2 years ago but he also isn't as bad as people are saying right now, truth is in the middle somewhere. But one good thing will come out of this for CK, he will learn some humility and hopefully treat others with some respect. If he gets fired and doesnt want to go back to college and doesnt end of as head coach for Tenn, it wouldn't surprise me to see him as Belicheks OC if McDaniels can land a head coaching position somewhere.

I think people are more looking at Chip Kelly like RG3 or Kapernick. People were hesitant to expect anything out of them, and he found immediate success, but ultimately flamed out. As a fan 1) Ive watched like 3 eagles games since he was their coach, so IDK anything about X's and O's 2) Generally dont know much about X's and O's so regardless of who we hire, its about me generally liking the dude based of recent success or just feeling what hes talked about when I saw him speak. I think the majority of fans are more like me than actual football minds. this leads me to ask, did the nfl figure him out? If thats the case then these are the results you would expect.

What modifications to his plan has he made? To me seems like none.

The titans just fired a guy with a "system" who we thought would bring an offensive identity weve been lacking for 7 years, it didnt happen. Titans fans should be generally wary of a guy coming to coach the team after he reportedly "lost the lockerroom", "goes with his system at all costs".

Unfortunately for Chip, cons against him (to the titans), are things that are similar to Whisenhunt, which if you look at him with a clean slate are actually his pro's, so I just dont think he is a fit with the titans at this time.

Lets be honest, the only reason his name is brought up is because we have Mariota, and you cant expect a franchise to hand over the keys to a guy simply because he coached your QB in college.

    Subjugation,

You make some excellent points. Most fans don't know the X's and O's as you alluded to.

I think too much is placed on whether a "system" is failing or succeeding. Because no matter what you draw up from a X and O stand point, success is always driven on execution and heart. Can you drive your man backwards and push the LOS? , can you wedge him sideways to create the hole?. For me it comes down to can you impose your will on the guy right in front of you and if you do that collectively as a team, you will probably win that game. If anything, that is THE system.

There is a very fine line between maximum effort and really good effort but it will show it itself in 40-24 win or a 20-42 loss.

I think CK's name is being brought up not only because of the MM connection, but rather that he is the biggest name coach that will be available soon. If his only connection was MM and he wasn't a desirable coach, he wouldn't have a job or offer for years. But CK will have many job offers at 5-6 M a year next year. There are a lot of great football minds in college and the pro's that will be very interested in CK and they know a lot more about the game than us fans thats for sure.

chip Kelly and mariota couldn't win a NCAA championship. Mariota didn't win a NCAA championship in chips system after he left. Why should we believe the pair could win a superbowl?

I disagree because Spurrier tried the same thing. He had Patrick Ramsey to start and when he was sliding, they brought in Shane Matthews and Danny Wuerffel! Even with the former Florida QBs running the Spurrier system, it still didn't work.

I'm not a fan of Chip Kelly and never have been. Eagles fans are loudmouths and the fact that their team is in the toilet makes me happy.

I do not disagree with any of this, and thank you for admitting your bias (wish others would just come clean on this as well LOL).

My issue with CK is not that I think he is a bad HC, it is that he has shown to be horrible GM thus far (note that, as GM, he has had control over many of the personnel issues you cite above), and I see no way that (right now) he accepts either a demotion from the Eagles or a purely HC position with another NFL team immediately after getting whacked by the Eagles (assuming this happens). That would be a hit to his ego, and for the immediate future he may still think that other issues (besides his own inabilities as a GM) caused this failure.

My guess is that, if the Eagles try to demote him, he will resign and go back to college for now. In time, he may realize that he was not ready or equipped for the GM role and come back to the pros as a HC only. However, right now that wound would be too fresh for him to ignore IMO.
