I would say almost the opposite. Kelly took over a decent team from MIKE BELLOTTI that he spent two years @OC with. Decent but not exactly strong.

His second year he suspended his QB and took Oregon to the NCG with the RS freshman backup. That backup still holds the record for the most passing yards in a NCG. Playing against an SEC defense, QBing a run-first system and a bunch of no-name receivers. They held Cam and Auburn to fewer points than anyone in the SEC that year except Ol' Miss. And they only lost in the final seconds.

That same Kelly coached team-QB won the Rose Bowl the following year, setting records against a great Wisconsin defense with Russel Wilson and Montee Ball on offense. That QB is Darron Thomas.
Thomas wasn't good enough to get drafted and now plays in the arena league, when he's healthy.
I also find it odd that Pete Carroll, who ALWAYS ran a pro-set offense, adopted Kelly's zone-read run-first spread when he got to the NFL, and wins with it.

I'm not sure Kelly is a great choice for the Titans, and he certainly should not have personnel duties anywhere.
But give credit where it's due, Kelly knows how to make something out of damn near nothing when he needs to. Certainly moreso than Bryant, who could recruit with the best of 'em.

I doubt he goes back to college. The word is he HATES recruiting and dislikes schmoozing boosters even more.
    But we'll see.

    Let's look at his accomplishments:
Did he turn around a losing program? No
Did he win multiple national titles? No
Did he win a national title? No
Did he win at school where it is hard to win? No
Did he keep the team winning for many years? No, he was not head coach long enough
Did he have success as a head coach with more than one program? No

Chip clearly had a good run in his short time as a head coach and was probably one of the better coaches in college football. But he is clearly nothing special.

Steve Spurrier hated recruiting and boosters (most college guys do). Until he went to the NFL, after that he was more than happy with recruiting and boosters.

Granted, NFC East is tougher than AFC South, but that's not saying much. Winning 4 games in 2 years is what got our head coach fired and has us looking for a replacement.

I prefer to cast the net a little wider than our own backyard (Mularkey) and to pitch back the little fish (Kelly) when looking for applicants.

10 wins in two seasons is better than 4, no argument there, but I want to set the bar higher. We deserve better than a head coach who struggles to break 8 wins every season.

Phil Knight is probably the biggest booster in all of college football, and he had to build the $138 Million football op center (the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex) on campus with an office in it, because Chip wouldn't even go see him 70 miles away.

I seriously doubt it makes any difference anyway, as I don't think he'll be fired in Philly. Lurie would be smart to find a decent GM that can pick personnel and go back to the conventional way of doing things.
Chip's a pretty good coach, but he's in over his head in the current situation.
Besides, I don't think it's about money anyway. A college would be nuts to hire Chip because
    1) the NCAA would watch him like a hawk for recruiting compliance.
    and
    2) He'd go right back to the NFL, even for less money, at the first opportunity.

I don't understand all the hooplah about Kelly being fired in Philly. I thought he was doing pretty decent there. They'd be dumb to let him ship off all those players and make all those moves and then fire him the next year.

That is exactly what philly will do unless he wins the division, in fact I think if he loses to lions today he is done.

So who is considered a home run hire? Hue Jackson is a good coordinator, unproven as head coach. There are no current college coaches with proven NFL success. Gruden, Dingy and Cowher are not coming out of retirement. Harbaugh isn't leaving Michigan plus he is a nutcase. Not sure there are any proven coaches leaving a good job to come here, maybe Sean Peyton but that's about it. So who would be more proven than Kelly or Peyton?

To say that Kelly was not a good college coach is complete lunacy. That guy won a ton of games with mediocre talent at best. In terms of recruiting, who the hell wants to go to Oregon over and school in California or the SEC? Heck, Mariota only had two scholarship offers and Hawiia ( where he played right down the street) didn't even offer him. I don't know if he is the answer for the Titans or not, but that dude is and should be the most sought after coach by any college seeking a coach. It's similar to Spurrier in South Carolina. Please name a point in time were the program has experienced that level of success? Same for Cutcliff in Duke. Your criteria is hardly what makes a good college coach.
