I understand DT decision. Will be interesting to see if he gets Div1 offers.

    He could be special

Rare individual to be sure. His heart has to be huge in order to pump blood through that massive body. I lost a very close friend of mine 2 years ago- 7'1" 375 lbs. He died of a heart attack at 31 years old. I bet he went 400 plus at the end. I used to laugh at giving him rides in my Dakota! Knees nearly touching the roof (it was really comical). What an awesome guy he was........ Hope the kid finds his way.

Sounds like Spain will be starting at LG this Sunday. I'm all for giving the kid a shot. Was a high priority UDFA.

I would disagree. Bell has not been good. Not at OT nor OG.

It is arguable that he is our best OL-man because no one has played very well. Lewan has been beaten more this year than last year and actually looks worse!

I'm starting to lean toward a coaching and scheme problem though they certainly do have a lack of talent. When we can't get a decent game out of Oher at RT but Carolina can play him to decent effect at LT, that's clue #1. When Levitre looks like he's done for the last 2 years but goes to the Falcons as looks much better...that's clue #2. The fact that our whole line keeps getting beaten mentally and physically and it doesn't matter if we are talking 1st rnd picks (Lewan/Warmack) or UDFA...the line has NOT improved and I can't really point at a single player who I think has really improved under this OL coaches' tutelage.

Does replacing the OL coaching staff fix the problem in your opinion, or is it a combination involving our players as well? It isn't like the team did not make investments on our OL when they obviously needed to be made. I am a little curious about not addressing a need this year having a rookie QB coming in. Terrible evaluation from upper management, or the underlings saying we have what we need to get it done? I don't know. What say you? Seems to me your point of players leaving and playing better certainly speaks to a scheme situation. I am just wondering how we arrived here. Do we blame only the coaching, or does RW deserve a good portion of the failures as well. Is it too complicated? I am not a "football" guy, but it seems fairly simple to me----- BEAT YOUR MAN. Lewan and Warmack should have been doing that effectively.

Good post! The 2 biggest points are first, players not getting better and players leaving and playing much better on other teams which speak to a coaching and scheme issue.

The BAD way to approach this problem is to say we won't add more talent via free agency nor the draft (Bell and Poutasi aren't exactly the epitome of adding OL talent), we'll fix the coaching issue by coaching up the OL coach who will then coach up the individual players while the scheme will be adjusted to help protect the weak links or give more protection based on depth of passing routes.

The OL coaching has been a problem since virtually NO ONE on the OL has improved. One could argue Warmack is about even from last year but Lewan is significantly worse. Schwenke didn't really show improvement from last season and Poutasi was making the same mistakes he's been making in college since he's been here. Add Oher and Levitre playing better on other teams and in Oher's case at a harder position, and you have all you need to fire your OL coach.

But a larger portion of blame falls onto Whisenhunt and Webster. Whisenhunt for not getting rid of his OL coach, for not helping the weak links out with additional protection, and for not adjusting his scheme and playcalling to stop our QB's from getting killed. But Whisenhunt showed he did not want to change his scheme to protect his QB and that's a giant NO NO for a rookie QB.

So we have made adjustments to the scheme and given more help in pass protection and that has helped quite a bit in pass protection so adjusting scheme is a good thing. But we are still getting manhandled too often in the run game and players are still making too many mistakes. What do we do about those? Get a new OL coach and some new players and much like what's happening right now...find the best 5 guys to start!!!

So A, new OL coach and B, new players at RT and or LG and possibly OC. You adress all sides of the problem to get the best chance at fixing it. Hoping for the best and adding mid-late round talent is not gonna make much of a difference. We have seen when Andrews gets SOME blocking he can rip off nice runs. When he's trying to break 2-3 tackles behind the LOS, we end up in 3rd and 10+ and we are putting Mariota and our D in bad situations!!!

Thanks for the response! I always enjoy reading your posts. Seems to me that you have it nailed. I will say that I have witnessed many times players being coached and just not grasping what they are being taught. Think of a dancer with two left feet, or an outfielder not catch hopping properly when making a throw. Golfers come to mind. The pelvis starts the swing by swinging your ass toward the target first and then loading the lead leg to generate power. You can tell someone that until you are blue in the face, and they still can't get it. I am not saying that it is the case with our players, but it did come to mind. Having said that, I think you are right on in your analysis. I am ready to see what changes this franchise makes, because I think we finally have the number one piece in place with our QB.

I honestly think every single o coach should be replaced. I don't see any "coaching" at all. Our players look the same today as they did last year this time. I coach 2 travel soccer teams and when my players don't look better week to week, i only blame myself. This is a trait most high level coaches don't posses (ego). We have nobodies filling in on d and they still look decent at worst, that speaks volumes of lebeau/horton and co. Our o woes can be pinned almost entirely on coaching at every position, not just oline.
