alcoholism is a big problem in other countries, maybe moreso than here.

Also, we drive a lot more than other countries, so we're more dangerous by default, when we drink. America is so spread out. Walking/biking/taking the subway to work isn't an option for most of us.

But yeah, the prohibition/religious authority's plea that drinking is wrong is just plain silly, and some of it still lingers, although it has no basis in the bible or most other places.

But personally, I'm more comfortable assuming that these semi truck drivers, heavy machine operators, etc. are not drinking unabated in the middle of the daytime. Even though it's not always true.

Alcohol aside, you can bet your arse that a bunch of them are distracted w cellphone use which of course is pretty much worse than DUI at this point.
1 in 4 vehicle accidents are related to cellphone distraction now. Dozens of deaths daily in this country. Everyone is up in arms about the terryists - but the real impending daily threat to loved ones is texting and driving..

Oh yeah I agree. If you are driving for a living, or operating heavy machinery, or doing anything where you need to be on your toes and alert at all times then you probably shouldn't even be having one beer in the middle of the day.

I was just saying there seems to be this pretty prevalent taboo attitude regarding drinking during the day (even a low alcohol content drink) which I think is a bit silly. Obviously you shouldn't be getting smashed or severely impairing your ability to get your work done. But I really see no problem in having a beer or something at lunch in the middle of a workday.

I fell into a habit of texting while driving. It started as quick replies, then I found myself texting whole paragraphs. After a couple near collisions I had to tell myself to stop being such a fuggin dumb@$$ and basically had to train myself to leave my phone alone while driving. It really is scary when you just look around, particularly going down the interstate at 70mph, and see just how many people are looking at their damn phones. Or putting on makeup. Or reading books/newspapers(!)... I've actually seen that more times than I'm comfortable with. You really have to be vigilant out there cause some son of a bish could come smashing into you at 70mph at any moment.

Exactly why I harp on this so much - caught myself in a few casual instances of doing it, then more-so until almost driving off the road.
Way too easy to cause a devastating accident..
Sad part is there is definitely the attitude amongst some teens etc. that they are skilled enough to drive and text and party and whatever.. Teen entitlement.

Welp one of those has about a one in several million odds of happening and the other is pretty much a realistic daily risk for anyone who drives or occupies space near a street.
