NOT TRUE at all. Gotta go back and watch tape. He had 2 guys playing o-line off the street. If he plays against Washington and Jacksonville, those are wins.

I am 100 percent behind Marcus, but last year everyone was all over Mett for ball security in the pocket. After week 1, Mariota's weakness is ball security in the pocket. Most media and people here do not seem to comment on this. Its a learning process and I believe he will figure it out. Im excited to see if Mett has grown at all from last season. The last play against Miami with an all out blitz tells me he still isnt there yet.

MCL's by themselves do not require surgery. If an ACL is being repaired, then they may while they are in there. Again, the MCL has sufficient blood supply and will heal itself given the proper rest, time and rehab. I do not know what you do or who you work with, but in my experience working in sports medicine, MCL's are never repaired when they are the primary injury. That is old thinking that went out the window over 20 years ago.

Ortho/sports med. so you should know, even given an excellent blood supply, that a completely torn ligament won't heal itself, it's not gonna sew itself back together.

By your reasoning, any ligament with decent blood supply will regenerate itself and not need surgical repair, cmon man. So the Anterior talofibular ligament should never need repair, or deltoid ligament. I could go on.

I've had 2 ACL surgeries, PCL, MCL and LCL. 3 menisectomies, 2 microfracture. If I didn't learn from experience, the fact it's my career would help. Cheers

The original and recurrent statement was and has been "MCLs never require surgery".

The poll on this thread should have been "Should Mariota be held out?"

I'd say that it sounds like it's probably better to let him rest it for at least a week or two.

We're difinitely not winning this weekend against the Falcons so why risk getting him killed behind that JV Oline for absolutely no reason.

We are talking about a professional athlete, a franchise QB. We are discussing the issue in the context of the risk/reward of playing him behind a really bad O-line on a team that isn't going anywhere. We are talking about a grade II MCL sprain which DOES destabilize the entire knee. If DOES affect his ability to plant on a throw, primarily due to inflammation which DOES occur in grade II MCL sprains. When one of four stabilizing ligaments are weakened, the other 3 are at risk to unnaturally stabilize the entire knee. A brace helps that some, but not completely nor as good as the ligament in its healed state. Another hit or non-contact stress COULD injure the remaining ligaments severely when one of the ligaments is sprained.

MCL's are rarely the ONLY ligament torn in a knee injury. Even if it was, I guarantee you he would be advised to have it surgically repaired.

The only question here is if it really is a grade II sprain. I don't think it can be argued that if we have a solid/reliable back-up, the risk-reward decision would be to rest it.
