I would have liked to see Whiz draw something up which gave Mariota use of one of his best skills. Let him roll out with an option to pass or run it in.

They did have a pass out of that jumbo formation but it wasn't open earlier in the game.

That is what I was expecting as well. A play-action naked bootleg, maybe mixed with a pass option to one of the tight ends, would have what I thought was appropriate in that case.

I wonder if there is still a "learning curve" with MM under center going on here? The only logical explanation I can come up with for why Whis would not do that is if he is concerned that MM is not yet fluid enough under center to pull that off....

Whiz simply said he trusted that they could pound it in and it had worked a couple of times before. I don't think its anything to do with not trusting Mariota. I think Whiz really just wants to run the ball.

I've not had the guts to watch that play again or even read what Whiz said about it.

That is the likely explanation LOL...I am just looking at this on Monday, with a bit more of a "zen" approach, trying to make sense over that debacle of a play...

5 wide would have been a better set there.

But seriously, even a pass out of that formation would have been a hell of a lot better than that. Thats just putting your young guys in an unwinnable situation.

Honestly, lining up in the same formation and running the exact same play twice in a row is something that you see watching high school football. Once, when I played flag football in 5th grade I intercepted a pass that was based on an identical play from the previous play.

That is the level of creativity that I saw with that call.....bush league, simple as that.

When I saw them come in with that formation, I thought we'd get the 2 for sure. If I remember correctly, they had run Fowler in short yardage situations twice and he converted both times. I realize that the Colts were probably expecting that play, but they hadn't showed that they could stop it. I thought we had enough push to get a single yard any time we needed it. I was wrong.

The only problem was that we had literally just done it a play ago and it had failed to get into the endzone from 2 yards out. Any defence can stop a run if all 11 guys are keying in on it
