My advice is to check craigslist first.. may find a deal (usually no great deals). If not then, Check out the scalpers by the arena. They always have them for sale for every event, sometimes cheap. Hard to tell until the day of. Depending on how badly you want to go, you can wait until the concert starts, and the scalpers will be selling them really cheap, just to get rid of them before their value goes to zero.

Patience is the key for that approach. You have to be stern with the scalpers, or they will walk all over you. But when you get savvy in that approach, you can get some great ticket deals. If you are a good haggler, then this is a good method. Most (career) scalpers are total pieces of poo, so you shouldn't feel bad shooting them a reasonable offer.

But beforehand, if the event is going to be sold out, there isn't a great way to find a deal until near showtime.
