I still think Munch was mainly behind this signing. You know that man favors some OL.

Our cap is usually inflated by carryover anyways, dead money is of zero concern, this move is long overdue

Yes and no. The cap hit of his signing bonus stays with the team that he signed the contract with (us). The SALARY of his contract is transfered to them so unless he takes a pay cut, they will owe him $6.5mil this year and next. Then again, they can cut him at any time and remove him completely from their cap.

The reason this $200k thing was brought up is because IF we had been smart enough to do this deal BEFORE June 1, it would have looked like this.

His salary this year is $6.5mil and if cut before June 1, we take all of his remaining cap hit in 2015 ($6.3mil).

    $6.5mil-$6.3mil=$200k

We have the cap to absorb this this year and still have cap space available and he would then be completely off the books. But because it was done after June 1, it looks like this.

$6.5mil salary - this years prorated cap hit of $2.1mil= $4.4mil saved in cap this year (which we don't need).

But we take the rest of his prorated hit next year so we lose $4.2mil in cap next year and then he's cleared from our books.

So not ideal on the capology front but I'm amazed they were able to trade him at all so all in all, not bad!

No one would have traded for him before June 1.

Really? This signing screwed up our offense, our cap, and the culture of the team. And the fact he almost got a 3rd season being paid like a Pro Bowl OG for below avg play shows his error in judgement extended for years.

It's a step forward, but even after 2 years of poor play and poor signings for RT, we had a chance to really beef up the line with Wisniewski at OC, Mathis at LG, and then let Poutasi, Bell, Stingily, and Meredith fight it out for RT! Huge upgrade on the OL. Instead, the only applause comes by getting rid of a player who was overpaid and not starter material for this team. And a 6th rnd pick isn't worth the inconsistent run game and QB's getting killed the last couple of years!

Oh I agree. I just wanted to also point a finger at Munch for this. Yes Webster was in the driver seat for this signing.

Shame he was so bad here. Still think he has lingering injury problems that have just ruined him. Regardless, this was a good move for the team.
