Trading Mettenberger

No way you sit your 1st string rookie QB that needs all the reps he can get, unless he is injured, we locked up a PO spot, or we are up 30 pts in the 4th quarter.

Sitting Mariota after the playoffs are out of reach could look like we are looking at OUR options moving forward. Giving the media/fans/team reason to think that the coaches/FO aren't sold on Mariota, and want to see what Mett has for next year. That could easily escalate into a perceived QB controversy, or hurt Mariota's confidence going into next year. We've already had enough QB drama over the years. What this team really needs is 1 QB to play 16 games no matter the circumstances. We need stability.

But let's say we do decide to sit Mariota at the end of the year, just to "show off Mett". Do you expect the team to play hard in these 'meaningless games'? Esp when the FO has decided to take out their top QB? Probably not, so it could backfire and make Mett look worse ... and who is to say the games are meaningless for the opponents? If we put our 2nd string QB in a meaningless game with a team that doesn't care anymore around him, and we play a team looking for a PO spot, then you are just setting Mett up to fail.

Then if Mett looks bad, his trade stock goes down.

 

Also, how can you justify taking out your top QB (if healthy) but not the rest of your star players (Walker, Wright, Casey, etc). If you want to avoid injury for 1 player, shouldn't you want to avoid injury for all of them?

If you take out all of the good players, then who will Mett throw to inorder to "showcase his talents"? ... If you leave all the other star players in, then how do you explain to them that they have to play, but the rookie QB doesnt?

 

Or.
Even worse..mett comes.in and wins every game or plays better than mariota. Then how can you trade him?

 

I can justify it if I want to showcase Mett and give him a chance to set us up for a nice trade. You really want to risk an injury to Mariota to start 2 or so meaningless games? He's already had 14 or so games to get reps. At that point they aren't AS valuable as they were earlier. And I'd sit any other starter that had a quality backup that had the potential to fetch a big trade.

The point is purely hypothetical anyway. It doesn't reflect on anybody's perception of Mariota as our franchise QB.

 

I wouldnt trade Mett. You want to have 2 good quarterbacks in case of injury.

 

Why is this even a debate? He isnt worth trading (in terms of return value) and the Titans have a unproven commodity in Mariota right now. Its nice to know that if our starter gets hurt we don't have to turn to a QB with the caliber of Rusty Smith Or CBJ! Enjoy the ride fellas....

 

Ya..your right..only one possible way things shake out.
