It's a decent read. But, there have been plenty of successful mobile QB's throughout history. Just because these crapshoot run first QB's are drafted high, doesn't make them "like" mariota. If you watch this guy throw the ball, he is nothing like any guy on that list ( except, maybe Newton). I know it's offseason and there's not a lot to talk about, but let the dude play, then start comparing him to other QB's. Because i see a favre, elway, mcnair, steve young type....not tebow, vy, locker type. He won't be a "run first" guy, but use his ability when needed and to threaten the opposing d.

People seem to forget that guys like Steve Young, Fran Tarkenton, John Elway, Randal Cunningham ever existed. They were mobile QBs that had success. Hell, Steve McNair had a great career as a mobile QB.

Just because you can run doesn't mean you can't throw.

I don't see Mariota as a run first QB. He threw plenty in college. He used his legs wisely and WON doing both.

He's smart enough to know he cant run around the NFL like its college football. He'll be fine.

How do people eat this garbage up?

Johnny Manziel, Browns, 2014 – Not committed to being successful

    • Robert Griffin, Washington, 2012 – Entitled, not committed to being successful

    • Russell Wilson, Seahawks, 2012 – Superbowl champ

    • Jake Locker, Titans, 2011 – Injuries forced him out of the league, and was inconsistent. Possibly because of injuries.

    • Colin Kaepernick, 49ers, 2011 – More concerned about being famous than being a good QB.

    • Cam Newton, Panthers, 2011 – Successful when he has had the pieces.

    • Tim Tebow, Broncos, 2010 – Never a legitimate prospect.

    • Vince Young, Titans, 2006 – Immaturity and entitlement, forced himself out of the league.

    • Michael Vick, Falcons, 2001 – Game changing until legal troubles and age caught up with him.

Stupid ****ing list. Mariota is more mature than anyone on the list and a easily a better passer than all but Wilson and Newton.

Bad thread, 1/10, OP has herpes.

I admit I was disappointed we picked Mariota because I do believe Mett has the skill set and mentality to be a good, maybe great, NFL QB. I wanted a blockbuster trade, or at least something close to fortify our pass rush and OL.

I understand Webster sticking by his guns, the price they wanted didn't come so go with a solid QB choice. The thought process is that trading Mett (or Mariota) a year or two from now would yield some positive gains, although not blockbuster. I don't like that it appears we took Mariota to create buzz and re-stoke interest in the team. I think there was some input from ownership to do that. And that suggests this organization is still mired the rut of not having a plan and being able to stick with it.

Having said all that, I am interested to watch Mariota play. He does appear to have the work ethic and intangibles that great QB's have. His passing appears to be OK and I'm not worried about his pocket presence. I hope to God we don't have ANY designed run plays for him. That will signal the beginning of the end for him. I'd rather not convert a third down than have him run to get it. That only works with a QB built like McNair. And we know what it did to him.
