You need to go back and read your history books. The Egyptians built the pyramids and monuments primarily for their Pharaohs, they didn't really build "civilization" for all to enjoy. Their writing system was hieroglyphics that only a select few high priest could read and understand. The Greeks invented the first true written alphabet that could be easily learned by the masses (though they did refine their alphabet off of the Phoenician characters)

Oh, and I almost forgot one of the most important contributions of all, democracy.

I'll agree with you there, it's a sad state of affairs over there right now with the economy. Socialism run amuck for sure. We're headed down the same path here, you can't tax and spend your way to prosperity, sooner or later you go broke and Greece is a perfect example of that. All the free goodies from the government sounds great until you run out of other people's money.

Free healthcare, free college tuition, and you could retire from the government over there at age 55 with a pension for life....and they live forever over there, my grandmothers sister is 92 and strong as an ox, out painting the house, walking all over town.
