I like Mett..I was one of the few that would have been OK with drafting someone other than Mariota and putting pieces around Mett to see what he could do in his 2nd season. The staff obviously thought otherwise, whether it was because Mariota was too good to pass up or Mett doesn't have what they want in a starting QB...competition is healthy and if it makes them both better the team will be better off for it. When was the last time we had 2 decent QB's? Nice problem to have I think.

 

Maybe you didnt notice but we went 2-14 last year. When you have a rare chance to take a top QB prospect that will turn a dead fanbase into an excited one, its hard to fault them for doing it.

I broke down Metts play several times last year using film, everyones mouth was shut. No one argued. Its easy to look in hindsight and make an opinion. The potential was there.

Despite what some fans believe, the NFL is a business and business plays into decisions.

Btw...Mariota was a first round prospect. Mett wasnt. Thats common sense and im not going to waste my time arguing against the beyond simple logic of why a late round prospect wasnt picked in the first round.

Also, many players are confident in their abilities when giving interviews. Its very common in the NFL.

There is a difference betweem showing potential and being the answer. Not wasting time explaining the difference there either.

If you want to praise a 2-14 staff, go ahead. All of them have something to prove next season. (Even though i believe you have to give this staff 2 years with Mariota before they can accurately be judged)

 

I welcome new fans but if "hes confident" and "the staff thought so" are your arguments, them there is not much of a point arguing about it. You haven't seen some of the bad choices this organization has made over the past decade.

Team > any individual player.

The concerns about Mariota are legitimate. Only one person here is really "hating" on him. If he were the next "cant miss" QB, he would be in Tampa

Unfortunately, People like 520 are trying to make this a Mett vs Mariota thing and that's not the best way for the fans to look at it. All players are assets and while it's true only one can start at a time, we don't know who long term will be better and who will bust. But because we have both, we have a pretty good chance that ONE of them is a FRANCHISE QB.

I will root for Mariota when he's our QB and root for Mett when he is our QB. I think both have a good chance to succeed with the right system and cast but since one guy was a first rnd pick and the other was a 6th round, they are gonna favor the 1st rnd pick unless he gets hurt, falls on his face, or gets injured!

 

Mett led the NFL in passing last preseason playing against other team's backups. If Mariota is starting, he is set up to go against other teams backups again. They've done well to not create a QB controversy and this is Mariota's team now. If Mariota does poorly, like many rooks do, it could get interesting. I expect Mariota to be like a number of recent rookie QBs where he does well to start and struggles later in the season.

 

also when mett played in the regular season and put up impressive numbers still, most people he was playing with, not against, were back ups.

 

Charlie Whitehurst's Comments on Mariota

"It's kind of funny, the way I look at it, the off season is over and it's just like he came in here and he looked like he's been doing it for a couple years already," said Whitehurst. "There was never anything that I saw that was like, that needs to be worked on. He's pretty damn good at everything when he got here, and he's better at everything now."

"I don't want to say, I don't want to get ahead of it. Who knows what's gonna happen but I think that he's going to be a heck of a player," stated Whitehurst. "If I was going to say here's one thing he has to work on, not that it's my job but I'm not sure I could think of one thing. Just keep going and doing what you're doing. I certainly like what I see."

Lebeau's D going against him means they will absolutely know at the end of training camp if Mariota is ready and will be successful in the NFL. I just hope they're honest. I could totally deal with "he struggled in camp, 2016 starter" better than a one win 500 INT season.

 

500 interceptions? This is not Chicago, my guess is Mariota throws about 8 or 9 INT's tops thanks to LeBeau conditioning him all summer.

 

Word is offense got beat down by the defense all off season so far.
