A misconception people have is that there is a general intelligence that applies to all things when the opposite is much closer to the truth. Some people are gifted in certain talents or areas which can far outweigh their 'IQ' or in this case, a Wonderlic test.

VY failed due to lack of dedication to his craft, lack of maturity and a lack of confidence and perhaps from a poor support system. Like Winston, he was used to almost being able to will his team to win on the college level. Not that easy in the Pros for 99% of the players.

Locker failed due to injuries, inaccuracy, constantly changing offensive systems, not enough help at OL and in the run game. A strong run game, stable offensive system to learn and develop in are important things for young qb's.

Mariota has the dedication part, the personality (even keeled), true NFL size, better athleticism, good accuracy, is durable, mastered his offensive system, and has a lot of experience in both being a 3yr starter as well as performing very well in big game situations.

But like others, he can fail based on his own transitioning and development not getting there or he could fail due to what system they put in place for him, surrounding cast (OL, Run game), playcalling, etc. or some combination of the two. The fact that we took another DE and a FB when we don't have a starting RT should make everyone more than a little nervous and our OL playing poorly was a major factor in our offense's poor play both in run game and passing game. Of course, playcalling also had a lot to do with it as well...so, you get the idea.

So how long does it take for someone's head to roll when the #2 pick gets injured by someone blowing right by our non-existent RT?

Main difference is Locker was straight trash in college, and didn't really improve much over his 4 years. Yet the coaches ignored the tape (and injury concerns) and thought he "projected" to be a good NFL QB because he had a strong arm and came from a pro-style offense.

    16-24 record btw.

Mariota was actually good in college. He got better every year, and won his team a lot of games.

and just for reference ... what VY did in college.

Main difference is Mariota is a proven Super Bowl winner.
He's already better than both Mannings, Colt McCoy and RG3.
Texans want to trade JJ Watt for him.

Just a heads up for the fans here.
At the conclusion of the '13 season, MM did an interview with Rick Neuheisel for the "Under Center" series on the Pac12 Network. In it, Mariota explains some of his pre-snap and post snap reads, and how Oregon sometimes used the same play consecutively, that required him to make decisions based solely on post snap reads.
Not that this is exactly what he'll be doing in the league, but the video breakdown lets you guys know that even as a 1st year starter in college, he was capable of successfully reading a defense according to the scheme, and executing based on split-second decisions with the ball, post snap.

Rick N's. hokie-ness can be hard to take in this video, but what he shows about the Oregon O and Marcus' ability to execute what he is taught is worthwhile to anyone genuinely interested in what this kid is capable of.

On a serious note. I wouldn't trade Mariota for JJ.

I tend to agree from the outside looking in

But I could see Locker in a studio somewhere for way longer than holding a clipboard would probably last.
