As I've said in the other thread, even if it were the agent's idea it was still unbelievably shortsighted and ignorant. Any agent worth their salt HAS to know A) how requesting a trade at that point would make Mett look, and B) that Mett has absolutely zero leverage to be pulling such a stunt.

All this agent succeeded in was making his client look foolish (again, IF it truly was the agent's doing).

To be fair he said the whole team views him as "a starter", not "the starter". I took that to mean they believe he is capable of starting in this league, not necessarily that he should be the starter of our team over a 2nd overall pick. And of course this is all coming from Mett's BFF anyway so I'll take it with a grain of salt.

I know that I am in the minority here, but I really think that the best way to go in this situation to try and avoid a major controversy would have been to say that Mett is the starter and Mariota is going to sit and learn for this year. Similar to what the Jags did last year. If Mett lights it up then great you roll with him. Winning is the name of the game and if Mett is doing it then that is all we should care about. If Mett isn't leading us to wins then you transition to Mariota. If Mett gets hurt then you go with Mariota. If Mariota beats Mett out in camp then great you go with Mariota.

You are leaving yourself with very few options when you do what we have done. The way that they have set things up they are going to almost have to admit they screwed up if Mariota doesn't start the opening game. If Mett is clearly better in camp then you are going to lose the team by forcing Mariota on them. Again all the players really cares about is winning and if they feel that Mett gives them the best shot then that is who they are going to want playing.

The expectation has been set way to high in my opinion. You set the bar low in terms of when Mariota will be ready and if he is clearly ready sooner then everyone is happy. If he does not perform to your expectations then you just say we knew it was going to take him a little longer to transition to the NFL and that is why we said from day #1 that Mett was going to be our starter.

And how did that work out for the Jags last year? They picked 1 slot behind us in the draft ... I don't think that is the right team for us to model.

Look, Mett had his chance last year. He had an opportunity that most 6th round rookie 3rd string QBs NEVER get. He had 6 starts to prove that he was the guy going forward. He lead the team to 0 wins in his 6 starts.

I get that he showed some potential, but if you really want to ensure your status as the starting QB, you need to win games so that your team is not even in position to draft your replacement ... If Mett wins 1 or 2 games, then we are probably not even in position to select Mariota. Mett didn't do that, but its not like he wasn't given a shot (which is more than most 6th round QBs will ever get)

I think the staff is VERY aware of their situation. They have been from the beginning. During the entire draft/evaluation process, this staff has known that they must get this right, because if they don't then their jobs are likely on the line.

I am sure they discussed building around Mett vs taking Mariota multiple times, but ultimately they felt Mariota was too good to pass up, and Mett didn't show enough.

Its a risk, but once the FO decided to take the risk then they HAVE to go for it 100%. Now that they took Mariota, they NEED it to pay off NOW. They need to make him the starter so he can get as many reps as possible. So he can build as much chemistry as possible with the team. and to squash any potential QB controversy so that come week 1 Mariota will be as prepared as possible to start.

They know what they have in Mett, and they weren't confident enough to put him out there with their jobs on the line. Now they MUST go all in and either sink or swim with the Mariota pick.

We tried the whole 'sit the rookie and let him learn before'

We didn't instantly name VY the starter. Instead we gave that job to KFC. So instead of giving all those 1st team reps to VY during TC, they went to KFC during TC .... only to name VY the starter by like week 4. Perhaps VY would've benefited from more reps during TC if he wasn't destined to sit a whole year.

We gave Locker a full year to sit and develop ... he didn't really seam to develop at all over that time.

So you know what, why not try something new? If we plan on Mariota taking over at all this year, then might as well give it to him from the beginning. Let him get as many reps as possible and build chemistry. He will be better off than throwing him into the fire mid-season.

And its not like Mett is an established vet. He is a 2nd year player that has a career record of 0-6.

they not only drafted MM, our whole draft was pieces around him. They are modifying the offense for him. There is a lot of thought and preparations involved here. MM was decided better option than Mett. Give them credit for having guts to do what they thought best and not staying with status quo. Our offense needed changing.

I agree....They can say whatever they want, but this entire draft (minus a couple of whatever type of guys in the middle rounds) was built around MM. Weapons, protection, and run game support. I commend the FO for going balls out and not being vanilla for once. I think most analysts agreed, hence the good scores. Now is it a boom or bust kind of draft? Sure....but i'll take it over the bs we have seen the past few year. This franchise finally has some life!

And if you have a dynamic player who can change games, why sit him and wait. If you feel he is a game changer, which they do, you play him. Like the way they made a choice on the player and stuck with it. Boom or bust , we have a plan . More than last year. Last year on both sides of ball was let's see what we got. That was not impressive. And yes you can build your OL and say Mett could be good. But if they blitz, or someone misses an assignment , mett was going down. MM can move and extend the play.
