I'm sure we wouldn't do the trade if we didn't know he would resign...kind of like how the bills knew mccoy would resign after they tRaded for him

Dude, you have to be smarter than this, this isn't that difficult.

I'm not saying a rookie gives us a better chance this year, I'm saying that in the long run a solid rookie has a higher probability of contributing to winning a SB with us than Rivers does.

You make crazy trades for over-the-hill players when you think they can come in and win immediately. A perfect example would be the Cleveland Cavaliers: LeBron comes back and (though I really hated the idea, and it looks like I was right to) they trade Andrew Wiggins for Kevin Love because they feel the window to win is over the next 3-4 years.

We are not in that position. We are a terrible joke of a team whose window will hopefully open up in the next 2-4 years (pending on how well the GM does... which, quite frankly, doesn't bode well for us at the moment).

Seriously, we're so bad that the Bucs had to throw their final game just to keep the first pick because we couldn't beat the Colts while they were resting their starters. That's where we are.

So while I would say that the chances we win a SB with our next rookie is low, I would peg the chances we win a SB with Rivers at the helm as even lower. This dude didn't even get to the playoffs last year, and you think he's going to win the big game with the Titans? Laughable.

As for mortgaging our future, the Cavs are also a good example of this. K.Love had one year left on his contract when he came to Cleveland. If we don't win it all this year and he leaves, guess what? We threw away the #1 pick and the ROY.

Similar situation with the Titans: we have the second pick and the potential to draft a really good player (who could certainly also be a bust, that happens). You want us to trade that player away for Rivers. Well what if Rivers gets hurt next year? What if he doesn't and we suck anyways? You think Whiz is still the coach then if we have new owners? You think Rivers sticks around if Whiz isn't the coach? Do you think Rivers sticks around if we continue to suck as bad as we have been?

The fact is that, if we drop 15 spots in the draft (where the chances of Webster making a good pick drop exponentially) for Rivers, and Rivers doesn't win a SB for us the following year and then leaves, we just wasted the chance to get a good player for our team that we could rebuild with for a brief rental of an over-the-hill QB who has never even been to the SB. And that's Browns level stupidity.

I'm sure he'd resign, Rivers and Whiz love each other.

Hypothetically, lets say #2 for Rivers, #17, & #117. SD basically sweetens the deal by adding in a 4th. If they truly LOVE Mariota, we may be able to get more.

We could probably trade #17 to early-mid 20s and also pickup another 3rd. Then we'd have:

    #20ish, #33, #67, #88ish, #100, #117 in the first four rounds + Philip Rivers.

I can see the interest. But, I just can't imagine winning a SB w/ Rivers, so why are we mortgaging the future on him? People have been saying, "well Whiz took Warner to the SB and he was old" the Cardinals had a solid roster (Larry Ftizgerald, Anquan Boldin, Edgerrin James, a solid OL, Calais Campbell, Darnell Dockett, Antonio Smith, Dansby, Antrel Rolle, Adrian Wilson, Rodgers-Cromartie). We're still multiple players away (including QB) from even talking about playoffs, let alone a Super Bowl.

I was bored so I was looking at a Chargers forum, just to see what they were saying about the Mariota/Rivers trade.

Most of them want #2, #33, and a future pick for Rivers or #2 and '16 1st. That's a big HELL no.

Note: they also think they can trade Rivers for Watt straight up... haha

Look at our draft history, we're mortgaging a 1-bedroom hunt ravaged by a storm that was 2014. Theres little to lose..

Go big or go home, Rivers is a game changer.

If we truly want a new QB and are not giving Mettenberger another year... i'd prefer just to draft Mariota then trade for Rivers. I know that's risky.

Less risky than handing an over-the-hill QB the keys for 3 years of mediocrity and then going right back into rebuild mode.
