LOL yeah, all coaches are retained throughout their complete contract period, regardless of performance. Must have something to do with their salary cap value....wait, no.

If Webster/Whis fail to trade down, then pass on Mariota, and have another terrible season (5 wins or less), IMO they will be on very thin ice, especially if we have a new CEO at that point.

Contract term makes no difference....sunk cost IMO in which a negotiated buy out could occur.

I would not be so sure about that....changes are being made at the top of the organization, and loyalty to previous hires will be lower. Performance can offset this, as can joint ownership/accountability in a new major investment (such as a franchise QB).

Improvement in performance would require major improvement in game day coaching, which, quite frankly, I am skeptical will occur. If Webster/Whis can point to the investment that the team (including the new upper management) made as a reason for lack of success, it buys them time IMO, which is why I could see this happening.

The absolute worst scenario is this team drafts Mariota and some team offers a late round draft pick for Mett. Then Mariota struggles to make the transition to the NFL while Mett goes somewhere else and puts up 30 TD's and 4,000 yards. BTW that would be the numbers Mett would've hit in a full season here. Sure the knock on Mett is a statue but make no mistake he can throw the ball all over the field and he has potential.

    be realistic here...
That's not how anything works.. You can't take a small sample size, and assume that pace will be kept. And even if he would have hit those numbers, he'd have been another Billy Volek, with some nice numbers, but can't win a game to save his life.

In 2009, VY was playing lights out to start the season... then the bottom dropped out, and he was never the same again.

Too many factors go into a 16 game season, to where it's absolutely foolish to assume that a pace like that would be kept by someone who sits in the pocket and waits to be hit, like ZM. That's a very early 2014 @JCBRAVE -like defense of Jake Locker. (sorry to call you out, JC)

Some people are just teases for a few weeks per year. That in no way means that you can make any assumption what they can do for 16 games plus playoffs (pipe dream at this point)

    Zach Mettenberger sucks.

    Marcus Mariota will suck.

2015 is going to be a waste of time.

Heres what I find a little confusing...there are a few think we should draft Mariota because he could be a franchise QB and if you need that you don't pass it up. But he doesn't fit the current coach's preference for a QB nor does he fit the system. The current coach could be on the hot seat with a sub par season....so how does picking Mariota make sense for Whiz?
Trade down with Cleveland...12...19...and give Mett some weapons

Oh absolutely as Mettenbergers absolute ceiling. But, I do think that Mettenberger could reach it, with a team around him. We'll see.

If we go 2-14 again, hell no he won't.

This is the exact reason why I still expect us to take Mariota... It buys Whiz/Webster at least an extra season.

Rookie QB gives them an excuse for sucking.

Even if we take Williams and he's a beast, we'll still suck, and it may not be enough for them to keep their jobs.

Locker flashed as a rookie, so I'm sure Mariota can too... and that is all our "ownership" needs to see to keep Whiz/Webster around for another year.

This isn't what I want... I'm just being realistic.
