This is how feel about our qb situation.

With that said i will not be happy if we take any player other than jw or mm at #2.

Bingo...It's deeper than just taking "BPA". At #2. you need a person that will help win games and turn around the franchise. LW isn't going to do that. I believe you will be a happy man come draft day. They went heavy D in free agency for a reason, and come draft time, expect QB/RT/WR to be drafted and very early.

Marcus Mariota will set this franchise back another four years.

Vince Young set us back four years.

Mike Munchak/Jake Locker set us back four years.

Marcus Mariota will be another four years.

12 years wasted. A little more than a third of my life wasted on this team when it's all said and done.

I think it's highly possible mm succeeds in this league.

And bottom line, if we don't take him, we'll be sitting here next year, possibly with worse draft position. And you'll be bitching that whoever the qbs are next year will set us back four years.

This draft is simple. You fill out a card that says winston. You fill one out that says mariota.

Unless you are able to trade rape someone, you turn in the card Tampa doesn't.

How can anyone expect to hit a home run at QB without taking big swings? Maybe you strike out, but you need to take that swing.

Finding a Tom Brady is the equivalent of hitting an inside-the-park homer. It's possible, but it's so rare and flukey that it's not worth the effort to try to do it.

That's sort of how I see Mettenberger. He might work out because the odds are overwhelmingly stacked in favor of him failing.

Drafting Mariota would be taking a home run swing and it will suck really bad if it's a strikeout, but it would be pretty nice to hit a home run and get an All-Pro QB for the next decade.

That's not to say I would actually pull the trigger on Mariota. I'm not sure I would. This is just what I've been thinking about. Risk management and knowing when to take your shot.

    Too many baseball metaphors?

I totally agree with your idea of swinging for the fences and trying to hit a home run on a QB, but what do all of those guys have in common? They were not elite passers coming in to the league(Mariota included).

What makes people think Mariota is an elite, top tier prospect? His legs. He is not even close to being an elite passer right now. You're banking on him doing what Young, Locker, RGIII and so on and so forth couldn't do.

You're basically hoping he's Cam Newton. The one guy who did pull it off, when Carolina adopted a lot of his college playbook. And Cam was a much better prospect, IMO.

We have to learn from that same mistake we're making.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I don't know if you're giving enough credit to Mariota for his personality/intelligence (something Young and RGIII totally lack) or arm/accuracy (something Locker lacked). It's not fair to him to suggest he isn't a top-tier prospect. He is. But he's not a traditional one.

There's no denying Mariota has a very low floor and a long way to go to hit his upside. Your evaluation of him seems complete and I won't try to change your mind. Frankly, I wouldn't know which way to try to change it. I admit I have no idea if I believe Mariota will hit his ceiling or be a bust.

I see more people trying to say he can be our Russell Wilson lol

Who, was a 3rd round QB...

Who also played a pro style offense in Wisconsin

Who was drafted to a team with a good defense at the time

I try to leave personality/intelligence outside of my evaluation because I really have no idea what these guys are like outside of what the national media reports, unless it's someone from the program I follow because I believe a lot of the local beat writers/forum insiders.

As far as accuracy with Mariota is concerned, I think he's accurate-ish. He isn't going to lay a guy out over the middle of the field or throw it in the dirt like Locker would. He doesn't throw guys open. His offense doesn't ask him to. He doesn't throw in tight windows consistently either. I don't think he's going to know what open in the NFL is going to look like.

I was a big fan of Wilson. Learned a totally different offense in one offseason when he went to Wisconsin. Voted a team captain.

His size didn't scare me at all. He played behind the tallest offensive line in the country that year.

He was a no-brain selection in the third round.
