    Randy Gregory OLB Nebraska

    6’6 235-250lbs

The curious case of his Draft stock. What has happened?

I am a Randy Gregory fan, he was my favorite prospect last year in college and I watched a lot more of Nebraska than I really should have. All year the talk was of Gregory going as high as number 1 overall, at least top 3. That’s how highly thought of he was.

Two things have damaged his stock, he got niggling injuries towards the end of the season and his weight at the combine. Now everyone thinks that Fowler, Ray and Beasley are all better? Why?

The nagging injuries played their part in his stats but if you watched the games he was healthy in, he was the most dominating player on the field everytime.

He handles a lot of the weight issues here: “I plan to be heavier on Pro Day,” Gregory said. “I can’t put an exact number on it. I’ve weighed anywhere from 230 to 258 before. I cam carry the weight, and can play at the weight.”

Gregory, to me, is the most refined and displays the greatest technique out of all 4. He also has the highest ceiling, as well as the best all round game. There is one thing that can’t be timed at the combine and that’s bend and hip flexibility: Again something that Gregory I think has over the other 4.

My three favorite fits for us in this draft are Leonard Williams, Randy Gregory and Amari Cooper. It all depends on FA of course, but those are three guys that would be excellent fits here.

Whats your opinion on Gregory and who do you take at 2 if you have to take a Pass Rusher at #2. (Assume we sign Morgan or 1 of the other OLBs in FA)

As pure pass rushers, I'd put Ray and Beasley ahead of everyone, as I have since November/December.

As an all around complete OLB, Fowler would be my favorite.

Like most here, I'm not a fan of Gregory. I think he has the most potential, but we know how that story goes most of the time. Way too risky of a pick at #2 IMO. I thought it was funny that Nebraska listed him at 6'7" and he came in under 6'5".

Unless Philly does trade up with us during the draft (I'm holding out hope Chip wants Mariota that badly, but Idk), we need to just go Williams. Safest pick to make at #2.

Ignoring his injuries and size, I think he is slow off the snap and has a bad attitude.

Ray and Beasley are pure pass rushers and explosive.

I think Fowler has the best chance to be a dominant 3 down guy.

    ...but I want Williams.

Gregory shows flashes, but disappears...a lot! What did he do against USC in the Bowl game? 2 solo and assists? LW was dominant in that game and was a vastly better player. LW had 80 tackles and 7 sacks (2 were called back in that bowl game or he would have had 9) as a 2 gapping DE. Gregory had 54 tackles and 7 sacks as a pass rushing DE. Gregory lacks production and is not as much of a difference maker consistently as you want him to be.

Add to that that Fowler showed up at 260 as expected with longer arms, Beasely showed up 20-26+lbs heavier than expected and was the best defensive athlete there and most explosive, and Gregory was shorter and 20-30lbs lighter than expected and still didn't dominate the athletic drills at the combine.

Don't get me wrong, someone will draft Gregory in rnd 1 and probably take a chance on him in the top 10. But he is a boom or bust player as you are PROJECTING him to become a much better pro based on what he CAN do, not what he does most of the time right now. Fowler is a little bit in the same boat as he doesn't have great production either, isn't as explosive as expected and needs a lot of work on his technique and moves. Dupree also was inconsistent on tape too but like Gregory, shiowed flashes he can do it all. Unlike Gregory, Dupree is the biggest of them all AND explosive...but a bit more raw than Gregory. Greater projection means greater risk....but also greater upside.

Beasely has the most good tape, the most production, and showed up bigger AND faster and more explosive than expected. Why wouldn't he be viewed as the best pass rusher in the draft.

I think Gregory is my least favorite of the EDGE guys and the 3rd biggest risk but with the 2nd most upside. Which games did you think he was so dominant in?

Beasley is my favorite because I like his speed and explosiveness but I voted for Ray because he seems more blue collar with a high motor and at least to me seems a bit safer (with not as high of a ceiling though). I'm torn however because for some reason #2 seems high for all of them. Maybe it's just because I've had Williams or a QB on my mind the whole time because of their value.

I can already feel it right now. We all have Winston or Williams in mind...

Draft comes around and we take Gregory.

I will flip my sh*t like never before. This just seems to happen almost every year... Stud on board I have in mind, Titans take a bum instead.

This notion that Gregory is a bum just astounds me

He isn't a bum, he is a project that had his value over inflated.

If Beasely is your favorite, why do you like Ray better? Keep in mind Ray has a complimentary pass rusher on the other side so teams can simply slide the OL towards Ray like they can vs Beasely. And Ray is a one hit wonder and is more of a project moving from DE to OLB. Beasely has actually dropped into coverage at times.

While #2 seems like it's high...especially for Beasely - mainly because no one even had him that securely in round 1 expecting him to show up at the combine at 225lbs and not knowing what to do with him. But his measureables do compare to Von Miller. I am anxious to see how Ray does at his!!!
