How safe is Schwenke?

First let me be clear, Schwenke will be on this team next year. My question is how safe is his starting spot? Given the degree of glaring roster needs elsewhere, we don't talk much about our center spot, although I think we all agree it could be improved. Centers are unheralded players.

Honestly, I loved it when we drafted this guy. I thought he would evolve into a solid center and would was a great find in the 4th round. I still want him to succeed. However, this year he went down after week 11 and went on IR. The past offseason he had surgery (foot?) and was out for a good portion of offseason activities. His play in the 11 games he started this year was sub-par at best. Will he up his game next year and play a full 16 games?

We have not had a stud center since Kevin Mawae came over from the Jets (first 2 years here). Our line was great back then, although to be fair we had 2 stud OTs in their prime as well. I ask this because I would argue the center is a critical cog, especially with the type of QB we have. Mett is not a mobile guy, and is best when he can step into a clean pocket. Too often our center was pushed back into the pocket, which I believe caused a lot of disruption in our pass game last year.

One FA option at the position that really intrigues me is Rodney Hudson. This guy is only 26, and played extremely well for the Chiefs this year. He actually ranked as the third best center in the league, behind only Travis Frederick and Nick Mangold. The guy is a great run blocker, and is also a stud in pass pro. I believe he really would provide a noticeable boost to our OL play next year (assuming we at least get a decent RT as well).

Do you think we may actually address the center position in FA?

He hasn't played anywhere nearly well enough to have a starting spot guaranteed. There needs to be some kind of legitimate competition a three OL spots this season.

Definately hope we bring in Hudson or Wisniewski. Only two IMO who are upgrades over Schwenke.

I would than let Schwenke compete for the starting center position or try him at guard.

If anything draft someone to compete with him.

I don't think he should be safe. I really hope that Ruston swings for the fences when it comes to upgrading this roster. We need all the help we can get but if get good pickups in FA we could be in much better shape going into the draft.

He was average at best and shouldn't already be pencilled in for the starting spot. Competition is needed at every spot on the OL.

I would assume he's pretty safe. We must fix RT & LG, before we even worry about center. Then we have SO many other needs elsewhere, I just don't forsee us using picks/money when we could use it elsewhere.

Schwenke needs to find a way to help himself, he seems to be a fan favorite here. Unfortunately Ive seen very little to just hand him the job next season.

    Bring in another center

While Schwenke wasn't great, I don't think he was as bad as you guys say he was. We have actual HOLES on this team, ie RT, pass rusher, WR etc. We can only make so many moves in the offseason and don't need to attempt to replace serviceable players until our roster is further along. Schwenke needs to stay, if for no other reason it gives us a little continuity on the o-line. And who knows, his play last year could have been due to the injury, but I guarantee if you get a better guard and RT next to him on the line, it will make a world of difference.
