I thought Webster was doing well at first. During the 2013 offseason he attempted to sign everyone under the sun. Some he got, others went elsewhere, but he tried.

However, last year I thought they took on a "let the market come to us approach". And that's fine if you have a good roster, but we didn't. He sat on his hands last offseason and I don't know why exactly. To me it was markedly different than 2013 when we signed/went after many top tier free agents and acted with a sense of urgency.

Over the past year or so he has made more than a few head scratching moves. I used to be firmly in his corner but I don't know what the hell he's doing anymore.

Even if you think he had no input on that pick...was he GM this season? Was he GM Last season? Was he the guy who signed Levitre, Oher? Wanted Munch back but on his terms....then hires Whiz who does MUCH worse and does NOT demand staff changes??? Extended Griff at a Pro Bowl level even when he was playing at a below avg level?

I find it interesting you defend Levitre even though he's below avg and paid as a Pro Bowler and one of the highest cap charges on the team but bash Warmack who is getting better and still has a chance to be good and doesn't cost us a ton.

If Whisenhunt is handpicking our free agents, I'd fire the GM as he no longer has a job. The JOB of the GM is to put a team together via draft and free agency. If our HC is calling the shots, why do we need a GM? Though I'd suggest it's the opposite way around and think the Dawson firing is an example of that. Webster now has MORE power, even though he's done - at best - a below avg job!

I disagree quite a bit. Webster signed off on bringing Munchak back...TWICE!!! He failed miserably with free agent signings and re-signings (except Casey...one of his few bright spots). So it's not like he wanted to fire Munch and the owner over-ruled him. As I've said before, he's peforming below avg and that's IF you cut him slack for some of his totally failed fa signings. Of course if you cut Webster some slack, that means more of the blame has to go to the coaching staff...but I didn't see a single offensive coach or special team member get fired!!!

And now that we've climbed as far down as you can go...we want him having more power? If he fails as his recent track record...we will be bad for several more YEARS!!!

The problem is, the best OG doesn't mean you are great or even good...just the best available. And yet he paid him like he's a Pro Bowl OG. I don't know how he played in Buffalo as I didn't watch tape on him but supposedly Webster did...and did that with Oher too...another guy signed to a ridiculous contract and both are huge fails. Now I agree that coaches are supposed to coah 'em up and who's ultimately responsible for that? Webster. NO ON is being held accountable.....which is what Whis said would be an important factor in his tenure. Did our OL coach get fired? Did our OC? Did Whiz get his playcalling taken away?

NOTHING....and that's on the GM to affect change...unless he's part of the problem!

First off, I am not defending Levitre, he sucks, and I said so.

I am saying he was pretty much universally regarded as a good G before we got him. I cannot blame the FO for that pickup. Nobody predicted he would fail that badly. most NFL teams would have welcomed him at the time.

Warmack cost the team more than just cap space, he took a top 10 pick and put it down the crapper. what a waste. You can cut a player and free up cap space, but you never get that pick back.

I'm going to do something that no one else did and actually attempt to answer your question.

Webster still has a job because by all appearances the team owner is clueless and may not even want to own/run the team in the first place. Fat Tommy knows if he fires Webster, that means he will have to find a new GM and he has no idea how to do that.

Webster is a horrible GM (probably the worst in the NFL) but I don't think he's even the biggest problem facing the team right now. That's how bad things are. I don't expect them to get better any time soon.

Tommy's Rolodex is filled with worthy candidates he can dial up at anytime, its not terribly hard to replace a GM. You just stir up the names working directly under he leagues current GM's and say hey want a job...

How does any GM get his start?.......

Got any evidence to back this up? Because all indications are that Smith has no significant football connections. I think you're just making stuff up. Prove me wrong.

Of course he can look around the league and find a few obvious interview candidates. Actually finding and hiring a good GM is a totally different thing. I have zero faith he can do it.

The CBA is essentially a blue print how to operate.

You just connect the dots like a child and boom, you find your next GM.

How did your pal Ted Thompson get a job, was he not the VP of football operations in Seattle before Green Bay came calling? Was Webster not the same thing in Seattle later on and then brought in here?

This isn't the first year Tommy Smith has had his hand in the Tennessee Titans, he's been in the background all these years, he's learned in that time how to pick up and phone. Everyone is climbing the ladder, you want another GM, find the best VP of football operations wherever and send a plane to go get him.

You don think Tommy has a directory of all the other NFL teams?
