Agree....as mentioned previously, rubbing the ball will not lower the pressure unless a hole is created by the action. Actually, a theoretical case could be made that it would actually increase the pressure due to the friction resulting from rubbing the ball increasing the surface temperature of the ball, but the effect would likely be negligible IMO.

That said, if by chance Goodell did rule that rubbing the ball had an impact, that would be the ultimate in arbitrary ruling....not even the laws of the universe are valid in Goodell's NFL. That would actually be pretty funny IMO.....

Who's saying the Patriots where limited to rubbing the footballs?

And I'm not convinced of their innocence, I'm saying there's no evidence either way at the moment. It could be they did it deliberately, but we have no proof, not even circumstantial.

As I stated earlier, if the rules stipulated that the football should measure within the limits after the game, then it wouldn't matter if they did it deliberately or not, you would still penalize them. But that's not the rule.

And as for the Helium/Hydrogen ideas:
    a) it weighs less than atm air, so either the pressure or the weight would be off
    b) even if you got it within the limits it would perform worse than atm air (see Newtons 2nd law)

I find it astonishing that when hydrogen goes through combustion, it creates water. I f#$^^& love science!

If some guy with no practice can do it in under 60 seconds, I'm pretty sure someone who's paid to handle balls all day every day can do it quicker.

You forgot one option, he was good enough to deflate the balls AND take a piss, perhaps at the same time. Depends on who you listen to, this guy could have been doing this process for a while and have a good system down.

Explain. Newton's 2nd Law (F=ma) wouldn't change. The amount of force a person can apply on the ball is relatively constant.

If the mass of the ball went down, the acceleration from the throwing motion would go up. The reason a lighter ball doesn't travel as far has nothing to do with Newton's second law. It has to do with the force of air resistance having a greater effect.

ie. air resistance is a function of velocity, not mass. So a smaller object going faster is going to be affected by air resistance much more.
