Is Mettenberger "our guy?"

I like Mariota, but its no secret, Whisenhunt LOVEs big arm guys. John Skelton, Zach Mettenberger, Philip Rivers, those are the types he seeks out to run his offense thru, Mariota doesn't have a canon, I dont see them working well together.

 

The problem is, you can't project Mariota in this or any Pro Style offense since he's never run it. Both Mariota and Winston have the size and arm talent...but can Winston stop making bad decisions ala Mark Sanchez and not fall off a cliff maturity wise ala VY? Can Mariota learn, process, and read a Pro style offense?

Lots of questions = lots of risk! If Darrell Bevell was our OC or HC I'd be all in on Mariota as Bevell knows how to tailor an offense to his QB's strengths...even when they aren't traditional traits. But with Whiz we will be trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. Then again, if we do poorly next season I'm not sure Whiz will be here and maybe we go after a Bevell or a Malzahn or Urban Meyer!!!

I have a strong feeling the Texans will sign him (and he wants to start for the Texans) but Ryan Mallett is a free agent that would match what Whiz is looking for in a QB...big, canon, and not very mobile (lol) and already has some years as a backup.

Of course, if you sign Mallett to start and the Bucs take LW, no way do we take Winston at #2 and the Jets laugh at us for letting Winston drop to them!

 

Webster AND Whiz are gonna be tied to whatever QB they draft or the decision to not draft. If we don't trade down and let Winston fall to the jets for instance...and then Mett falls apart and Winston has a good season, they will also be fired. They can be wrong in the QB they take or DONT take. Of course, the only safe course to avoid this is to trade back for a bunch of picks. Then at least if the QB you passed on is successful, you can always point to the boatload of picks and argue you needed to rebuild the roster before adding a rookie QB.

I don't get the hype with either Mariota or Winston honestly. The defenses that these college studs see once they get into the NFL are WAAAAAAY different. I said on here before, I like some of the 2nd and 3rd round talent this year just as much.

 

ok so I flipped thru the first and 2nd quarter of that game vs Pittsburgh and Mett shows a few times he can see things coming before theyre there.

On this throw McCluster isn't yet open but Mett is climbing the pocket with his arm cocked back and on its way to zipping a spiral to McCluster. Mett knows the WR on top of the screen is going to force that SS to follow him out of the area so he makes the connection to McCluster.



notice he's doing this in a clean pocket, when the pocket isn't filled with LB's and stuff, Mett is a surgeon.

 

ugh watching that game reminded me why Levitre is so awful, LB's are just bullying him, wtf

 

So, what your saying is when Mett has a clean pocket, he is a surgeon? I think thatll work for us. Once we improve our line next year, Mett should flourish.

 

in that particular game when he had the time to throw, he was very impressive.

hopefully his knee is in better shape next year so he can move a little better, if the guy had any kind of speed we wouldn't even be wondering, he'd be the guy
