Definitely. Plus we could draft defense and accelerate this rebuild if have franchise QB and left tackle. Sankey has done well but hard to tell how good because of our OL.

Let's talk about how bad we are drafting LBs and WRs.

Ah, a typo. meant First PICK, not first round. No one anticipated he was a sure thing (not a monster like this) or he'd have gone in the top 2 or 3 picks is all I'm saying. No one got it 'right' in that no one thought he'd be or even become THIS!

Agreed. The point is we reached for a need and missed out on some really great players. And imagine if we would have...I don't know...traded UP!!!

I agree there is little to feel good about their ability to reboot/reload this franchise but...

we are not THAT far off either. Our D needs probably 2 passrushing OLB's and a S and our OFF really just needs a QB and better OL play. It's not like we have to throw away 20 guys, we just need about 6 players of high quality. 3 or 4 of those can come in free agency and at least 3 CAN come from the draft. Problem is...are we gonna bring in a Delanie Walker or a Wembley? Are we gonna draft a Locker in round 1 or find a Jurrell Casey in rnd 3?

The BIGGEST 2 things I'm looking at for the rest of the season is the OL play (each player) and Mettenberger's play. If the OL play improves to the point where we can pound the rock when we want to and force teams to play 8 in the box to stop it or slow it down, we'll be in a good position.

This is a mistake most people make. Rodgers and Brady were NOT can't miss prospects. Funny thing is, neither had a strong arm coming out and they both developed over a lot of time. If Rodgers had played as a rookie, he likely would NOT be very successful. Rodgers credits a lot of his success to McCarthy's 'QB Camp.' Under the right coaching and circumstances he turned into a great player.

A good comparison would be Steve young who didn't do that much before going to the Niners where he learned and developed into a dominant QB.

None of us are qualified? Given a lot of 'qualified' people's track record, it's quite arguable the more knowledgeable posters on this board could pick competitively.

Ayers never developed. We will see how he plays on another team but we don't know if it was coaching or the player or a combo of both. One of the reasons people felt he fell so late was that he might not have the physical tools to be dominant in the NFL (better college player than Pro). We will see.

ZB was a reach pick because they wanted speed and athleticism. But one reason a lot of people had ZB rated lower was he wasn't a great form tackler and that has to do with his ATTITUDE. To ZB and the coaches credit, ZB DID develop quite a bit and at one point was the best LB on the team. But his attitude was more of a problem than his skill...and they knew about that attitude when they drafted him. It will be interesting to see what happens with him now.

Can't fault a GM for an injured player. It happens.

But ZB and Ayers both fit with a 3-4 D so the new scheme has nothing to do with anything. Didn't Ayers play 3-4 in college and don't we have one of his coaches from there coaching him (or did)?

But all the players were used correctly, but Ayers just wasn't that good for us but ZB and McCarthy developed to good players when healthy (until ZB decided he could go off script whenever he wanted).

Well, he didn't play very well in pre-season both in not getting pressure against 3-5th string players AND he kept giving up outside contain. outside of that..anyone's guess...

Mannion to me is a bit of an oddity but I think at best he's a mid rnd prospect.

He is a protypical pocket passer and his strength is reading a defense and knowing where to go with the ball. Unlike a lot of college QB prospects, he takes snaps under C and runs more of a pro style offense.

Part of his reading ability may be masked because they run a ton of playaction which helps reading defenses. I think he has an avg arm at best. He can fire a rope 20-30 yards and usually he makes that throw in the red zone but when he throws medium to deep, he has to gather the ball which is a big no-no in the NFL.

So i like his reading ability, height and ability to throw some short-medium lasers and he has nice touch pass ability, but his lack of arm strength keeps him out of rnd 1 and probably 2 as well (though QB's always get pushed up). Reminds me a bit of Dalton.

But you can see a big difference in all those shorter throws Cooks and Wheaton turned into big yards missing this season.

Keep in mind, lots of QB's started with avg arms (Rodgers for example) who developed this. And he does have accuracy. A nice mid-rnd prospect and like Met, a tall pocket passer in the Rivers mold (though Mannion doesn't have the arm of either).
