That's a bad argument a lot of people like to use to defend manning.. It's way overplayed. He simply hasn't been good when it really counts in money games, to be the best of all time you can't have that reputation over the course of your career. If you want to go off best regular season qbs then he may be up on the list although Marino would have to be in that conversation as well

    This isn't really that hard.

Great players in any sport are ones who are great in the regular season and playoffs.

Manning has been great in the regular season but playoffs he isn't top 5.

Manning has played in an era when it is much easier to play QB. Yet still did not look as good as Joe Montana.

The problem with the question of the thread is...considered by WHOM? If Manning wins a SB this year and retires, the media will certainly annoint him best ever!

I remember when Manning was gonna play the Saints in the SB years ago that all week I was hearing that if he gets his 2nd ring he will go down as the greatest of all time. Blah blah blah. Writers like good stories and when you get to write about a legend, we tend to make that legend bigger than he was. Afterall, it will sell more.

There are 4 things that have made Manning one of the GOAT.

    1st Superior Talent
2nd Ability to call/change plays every down
3rd Rules to give him AND his WR's advantages in getting open and getting deep.
4th Superior offensive talent surrounding him

If you look at #2 of my list, it is a huge factor in why he's been great in the regular season but also why he's had problems in the playoffs/Super Bowl. In general, in the playoffs, you are going against the top defenses and manning is not only the QB, he's the offensive coordinator and sometimes the DC's can play him.

A notable example of this is when the Colts lost to the Steelers ending their playoff run. Manning after the game threw his OL under the bus. The reality was that it was Manning who got schooled. LeBeau saw that Manning favored a type of protection and figured out who had what responsibility on that call. Then many times that game, they got Manning to call that protection and the Steelers put that protection in a bind. Despite the Steelers getting to Manning a lot, he kept calling that protection against that looked and blamed his OL for not being able to cover 2 potential blitzers at the same time. They got beat because LeBeaue outsmarted Manning.

The realit is, Manning is one of the most dangerous regular season QB's in the history of the NFL. Why not the greatest? If you look at #3, that has a huge bearing when comparing stats of different generations. Yes Manning broke Marinos records, but what happened to Manning when he played under the same type of 'rules' that Marino played his whole career under? Manning complained and played poorly when NE's DB's 'mugged' his WR's. Marino set league records with this type of play against his receivers. Manning became avg. It's hard to imagine the type of numbers Marino might have put up if he played under today's rules.

But there are several reasons I'm not a Manning fan. First, he's a stats hog. He could be up 40-0 and still be not only playing, but throwing TD's in the 4th quarter. Second, even when he messes up, he blames his teammates. Third, he has not played well in the post-season for the first half of his career and despite playing better more recently, he tends to fail in the big games. His SB MVP is a joke as his defense and RB's severely outplayed him and he had a mediocre day at QB. A 1-2 record in the SB is not what the best QB of all time should have unless he has that record despite his own spectacular numbers...but they arent there. Lastly, he's just a whiner. Blaming the coin toss for an overtime loss?

For me, being a bit older than most, I can compare a lot of guys because I have seen them play, not just looking at stats. Everyone will have differing opnions because how much you put into regular season stats versus postseason stats versus SB rings is all up to you. Most people don't have Bradshaw as a top 10 QB despite his 4 rings. Few people think Eli is a top 10 QB in the current NFL despite the fact he has 2 SB rings...more than Peyton or Aaron Rodgers. Then again, Peyton has more records than any NFL QB in NFL history.

Personally, I'd put Montana as the best of all time. He epitomizes what QB play is all about. He won the vast majority of his big games and the bigger the game, the bigger he played (4-0 in the SB). He also played against tougher defensive rules and tougher defenses and didn't throw the ball 50-60 times a game.

It's fine some say Montana, but to say he didn't throw as much as Peyton and that's why his stats aren't as high is lying. Montana had those 50 throw games as well...

Lol horseface. Manning can break all the records he wants, but he's not a winner when the season is on the line. Montana, marino, farve, bradshaw, namath, unitas, all ten times the qb manning is or ever will be. You don't blame your teammates without taking some for yourself. Remember the 98 vols, who won it all after statmonger left.

Not about the number of throws. The league has changed a lot of rules to make completing passes a lot easier. Started around the time Manning entered the league. DBs used to be able to do a lot more than they can now.

Montana is the best I have ever seen play. The guy was a straight winner and a leader of men. Manning is great, but the best ever--NO. It is so much easier for the passing game today. It is pretty much two hand touch for receivers out there today. Oh, and you can't really touch the QB either!
