I saw Childress respond to a post and it got me thinking (plus the Locker thread) about how do you guys define a 'franchise' QB?

Is he top 10 in stats...many...which are important? Are they set numbers he needs to get to in completion %, yards, yards per attempt, total td's, td/int ratio, etc?

After contemplating the above...which QB's in the NFL are franchise QB's and why?

A pretty basic definition is someone you can build a team around and trust to win games day in and day out for multiple years while still being able to play at a high level. The numbers aspect can be debated and there is no clear cut "you must have x amount of y to be a franchise QB". Eli had a problem with INTs last year but that doesn't necessarily mean he is not a franchise QB. Others have has issues as well; Romo, Cutler, Stafford. As long as a QB can play at a high level and win games on a consistent basis and overcome the bad times, I think that makes them a franchise QB.

Good list but I'm not that picky. I don't think you necessarily have to be one of the most elite to be considered a franchise QB. I'd put Eli, Stafford, Cutler in the first category for sure. And maybe even a few of the others.

IMO a Franchise QB is one you can build a team around.

Good enough to make all the throw's from short range touch to big arm bombs.
Accurate and consistent and with better than a 2:1 TD int ratio.
We always hear analysts use a completion % above 65 as a benchmark of solid QB play.

Typically this kind of player is your guy for decade. That level of consistency is good enough to win for a long time and have a run at a championship. Sadly it doesn't grow on trees.

Jay Cutler a franchise QB. Lol.

Jay Cutler is the worst kind of QB. He's the kind of QB who will almost get you there, but he's also the reason you'll never get there.
