That's the thing. You don't HAVE to "throw yourself under the bus". It's not an either/or scenario.

To be completely honest, if I were a star NFL running back AND the highest paid player on my team/face of the franchise, I think I would say something like "We just aren't getting it done and we have no excuses. And if we're going to turn it around it has to start with me." As the "star" and "face of the franchise" you're held to a higher standard and more is expected of you. That's why you're paid the big bucks. When you refuse to accept ANY blame whatsoever while continually passing the buck to others it just makes you look childish and unappreciative.

If CJ would've been just a little bit more humble (I.E. humble AT ALL) during his time here, he'd have a lot better reputation along Titan fans right now.

I'd probably do something similar. I guess I've always found the idea of taking responsibility even if you don't feel responsible to be kind of dishonest. It's like your doing something not because you believe in it but more because it's what you are expected to do. Sometimes I'll watch a team's "star" or coach take the blame for something that is clearly not their fault at all and it just doesn't feel genuine to me. It's like they're saying it because they know that simultaneously it will make them look good and no one will really blame them because they've clearly done nothing wrong.

It's just an interesting dynamic to me. I don't think it's arrogant or selfish for someone to not take responsibility for something that isn't their fault because even if it looks "bad" they're being honest. Now when it is clearly somewhat your fault you should probably go ahead and take some responsibility. I could see some people saying to themselves "this isn't my fault so I'm not going to say it is". We've been socially cultured to see this as a callous or selfish statement but is it really?

I was about ready to say something similar...a real leader will shoulder some of the responsibility, regardless of whether or not it is actually the case. You can rarely motivate others by berating them and holding yourself in higher regard IMO...you have a much better chance of getting this done if you leave others with the impression that you are in the boat with them.

All of that said, I agree that this is a hypothetical case, as it has very little to do with CJ. He was actually part of the problem, and not an insignificant one. There were other problems (i.e. poor line play) as well, but he held out and basically slept walked through most of 2011, and had mediocre seasons the past two years. Not horrible , but definitely not worth the "top playmaker" bucks he was getting IMO. That, coupled with his awful attitude towards other players and the fans, earned him the "esteem" he currently gets from most of us (and will likely earn him similar "esteem" from Jets fans pretty soon as well).

Yep. I don't recall not one good 'splosion in either video. That's pretty much a dealbreaker for me.

Cheesehead already kinda hit on this, but I think as the highest paid player and "face of the franchise" it is your responsibility to at least act like a leader when in front of the cameras/recorders. If Tom Brady throws 4 picks in a game that were all tipped balls, do you think he'd say in the post-game "Well I don't know Bob, my receivers just flat out sucked today."? No, he'd most likely say something like "I've got to make some better throws." (I know he's been known to throw tantrums on the field, but he's usually pretty diplomatic and tactful off it)

If your teammates are continually seeing you, the team's "star", pass the buck and refuse to hold yourself accountable then how can you really expect them hold themselves accountable? You need to set the example and get the ball rolling towards change.

One thing that I have to agree on is that the Offense under Munchak was way too predictable. My 15yr old daughter watched several games with me and actually called out the plays we were going to run before the ball was snapped. Now we all know that if she can do it the DC for the opposing team is gonna be all over it. That being said the reason CJ didn't do well didn't have as much to do with predictability as much as him falling before the defense got to him. He is and always has been afraid to get hit.
