How many people do you think fit in NFL stadiums? The TV audience has increased by a number many, many magnitudes larger than would fit in all NFL stadiums combined.

You raise an interesting point. How important is it to a franchise's revenue base to have their stadiums full at games? I really don't know the breakdown of how TV revenues are split etc. Could be if teams don't GREATLY enhance the game-day experience, no teams will sell out. At least that is the trend.

Season tix guarantee revenue because it's all pre-paid. I imagine all TV viewing would mean people would only watch winning teams or those in conention.

Goodell has done more good than bad, but his motive is money, thats all hes focused on, he really hasn't done anything to enhance the sport itself. If it wasn't for TNF Id be in the anti-Goodell camp, but since he bridged that gap for me, he gets to stay on my good side (for now).

Revenue from ticket sales is quite small compared to TV revenue. Looking to the distant future, I can imagine a world where NFL stadiums are much smaller and more intimate -- and built around creating an ideal environment for TV rather than for the live audience.

I think you're thinking of TV revenue in the wrong terms. Revenue doesn't go up and down from week to week depending on how many people watch. It doesn't factor in the ratings for any specific games. The TV contracts are negotiated years ahead of time. Teams share the revenue. The Cowboys have high ratings, but they don't get more money from the TV contract than teams like the Titans.

TV networks literally pay the NFL billions of dollars and lose money by broadcasting the NFL. That's how important TV is to them. CBS pays billions just for the privilege of broadcasting the NFL because not having the NFL would make them a second-tier network. They try to recoup costs by trying to convert the massive NFL audience into viewers of their other shows. That's why you get so many promos for other TV shows during NFL games.

I imagine that's right, I'd like to know the specific breakdown. But why bother at all about spending any money to market season tix? Must be something significant to having people in the stadium.

I imagine a world where players do live NIKE commercials between downs.
    That and 5 point blurns.

The Packers' unique ownership situation requires them to publish these figures. They aren't too hard to find.

As for why teams market tickets, it's easy to figure out. The stadiums are already built and selling tickets does create some revenue, so it makes sense to try to sell tickets. Also, full stadiums lead to a better TV product.
