It isn't necessarily likely, but there's a chance Locker will have a very good season (and prove that his injuries were a fluke) and the Titans will be able to extend his contract for fairly cheap price because of his history. Then the team could be set up with a QB for the next 5 years at a discount rate, allowing the rest of the team to be stacked.

Like I said, it isn't likely, but it is possible.

The flip side is that Locker sucks again and the Titans draft a QB in 2015. Either way, doesn't look like this team will be giving a franchise QB a huge contract any time soon.

His eventual departure would have set the Super Bowl contenders back, they had to keep him.

SF was also getting an incredible discount only paying him $645,000 last year. You're always going to pay a little for past performances with a guy like that. Break it all down in the years he's already given the Niners, and the years theyre getting from him, its a solid contract. He'll also never likely see the full value, tons of incentives need to be hit for Kaep to end up cashing $126M in checks.

Wow... that Kaepernick contract looks WAY different when you see the real numbers. Only $13M truly guaranteed. Tons of outs for the 49ers. An incredibly good deal for the team. Kaepernick accepted way less than fair market value.

What is with all these "injury guarantees"? Is that typical?

From the way I read it, he is guaranteed the money for any given year after April 1, unless he is injured in which case he is guaranteed that year's money regardless.

So if he thinks he is about to get cut, just fake an injury right?

Which is why they don't let you in the door that year if you're on your way out (e.g. Steve McNair)

You can't just fake an injury. A team could easily request a medical examination and disprove it. Injury guarantees are for career-ending stuff. Broken necks, spines, etc.

Hammer to the kneecap ... easily worth $15M

Guarantees don't cover non-football injuries. I figured that would be obvious.

CK is good, but that's a lot of money....I don't see him as elite. He has wheels, but not amazing elsewhere. I called his 2nd year decline once they figured him out. I get this move, but I'm not sold on him 100% yet.
