Um, Id care if we draft a QB in rnd 1 this year and Locker does well and stays healthy and becomes our guy while a Jimmy G rides the bench? Id much rather get a starting position player who will make an impact THIS year from day 1 then a backup QB who may or may not be a franchise guy but we won't know for another 2-4 years.

And GM's aren't paid to waste 1st round picks!!! That's who cares - besides the fan base.

My thoughts exactly Gut! Perfect post. Impact player at 11 please! I mean offense or defense. Take the BPA, and that is not a QB at 11.

Uhh if we drafted a first round qb, you can expect him to play this year.

Like really - lockers gonna stay healthy???

Our biggest problem right now is QB, no one should care if we had a first round QB ride the bench because Locker kept him there. What a terrible thing to complain about.

Oh no, Locker is proving his worth as a first round pick, oh no:suspect:

God I hope so! I am on the Locker wagon at least for this year. Still a need to draft QB. Watched a little tape on Bortles (we have no chance of drafting), I like him. I also saw a chart (should of posted it, but lost my way)- it had Bortles 1 and Logan Thomas at 9. I didn't understand that. He has the measurable for sure, but an NFL quarterback I do not see. Had him going in the 6th round. Murray was still projected in the 4th. I will dig it up tomorrow and post it.

Murray could go as early as the top of the second. Possibly into the 3rd or 4th. I'm guessing the former personally. Of course there's the possibility of qbs slipping to the second pushing him down.

I'd rather see us take a second round qb to push locker or take the spot but I really don't want to wait around Til the 4th to take a rb. No guarantee of who will be left after rd three.

I don't expect everyone to agree. But my problem with your scenario is it's dependent on Locker actually staying healthy and playing like a franchise QB. Two things that he's given us very little reason to believe he can do. He can't even stay healthy long enough to get to the part about proving whether or not he's a franchise QB.

In my mind the much more likely scenario is that he continues to get injured and be inconsistent when he actually is on the field. Therefore, keeping in mind the new rookie wage scale, I not only wouldn't mind drafting another 1st round QB this year but I'd actually prefer it. That effectively doubles our chances at having a franchise QB on the roster. If the rookie turns out to be the guy, then great! If Locker turns it around and turns out to be the guy, then great! We should have no problem trading the rookie for something decent. Or we could just keep him around as a #2/JL insurance.

I get where you're coming from. But my line of thinking is just that we aren't going to go where we ultimately want to go without a legit franchise QB. I'd rather swing for the fences every 2-3 years or so in hopes of landing that guy, rather than drafting "positional playmakers" (who most of the time don't pan out the way you had hoped anyway) and hoping and praying that the QB we have turns into something he's never been. A lot of good the next Julius Peppers or Randy Moss is going to do us when we've got Jake Locker sitting on the bench in a boot and Charlie Whitehurst starting for us.

Like I said, I get your POV and I know that not everyone is going to agree with what I'm saying. But I think the new rookie pay scale enables teams to try this method. And there's no doubt that QB is far and away the most important position in field. I say get that locked down then you can build from there.

Just for fun, let's look at our 1st round picks since 1997:
Outside of CJ, Bulluck, Kearse, and potentially Wright whose production could you even say we would've necessarily missed if we had drafted another QB in their place? I know hindsight is 20/20 and all that but my point is the draft is a huge crapshoot anyway. So me personally I'd rather gamble on QB than CB/WR/DE/etc now that 1st round picks do not handicap your franchise from a financial standpoint.

Thats my whole issue, if Jake stays healthy its a wasted pick.

And if Jake does not stay healthy (which I think if everyone's being honest would admit is the more likely scenario) then we still don't have a QB and are going nowhere fast. Another wasted year. Another year behind in finding our franchise QB.

Wasted pick? Boohoo. Please refer to the list of 1st round picks I posted above. We waste our 1st round pick almost every single year anyway. Most 1st round picks are ultimately viewed as "wasted" or "disappointing". Finding a franchise QB should be priority #1 until you KNOW you have one. My two cents anyway.

We're installing an entire new scheme, we're not winning more than 1 playoff game, if Jake fails us, its all systems go in 2015 with a new QB.
