JJ Watt, Brian Cushing, Glover Quinn, JJO, Dan Manning, Connor Barwin, Brooks Reed, Antonio Smith, Mario Williams, and Demeco Ryans....I sure hope he had a top 5 defense. He knows how to pick em. I'll give him that.

Yup I think its name-recognition. He is somewhat of a more common name that people have heard of. I was more excited for Horton for that reason myself until I saw those stats you posted. But at the same time those QB's he had were garbage in Cleveland and the bad years of Arizona as was mentioned prior ... but at this point anything over Jerry Gray. Just need a change of culture.

I dig what you're saying. Since it looks like we're moving to a 3-4 I just want a guy who's damn good at it. Phillips did wonders for Houston and I think that he'd enjoy beating their @ss twice a year for cutting him and proving that he is a good defensive coach. I'm all for Horton too though. I think we're in good hands so if KW wants Horton that's more than fine with me.

    Per Ed Bouchette:
I was told Tuesday that if Whisenhunt asked permission to speak with Butler, the Steelers would allow it.
But Whisenhunt now is concentrating on Horton, who was his defensive coordinator in Arizona.

    CMON WHIZ!! MAKE IT HAPPEN.

To be honest I really like what Ray can do, he helped set up ARI for the dominant D they have this year (along with a slew of talent offcourse). He also really helped the Browns D in just one year, so I definitely won't be mad if we get him (I read in multiple places the Browns D was very underrated and helped cover up an ineffective O - we all know how a bad O can really hurt the D, so yeah, like I said I think Ray can be good for us). But damn, I'd love Butler and if the Steelers would finally allow him to take jobs, Whiz SHOULD definitely at least try to talk to him.

He's only been a DC for three seasons, and here's where his defenses ranked:

    2011: 18th
    2012: 12th
    2013: 9th

That's an average of 13th which isn't bad at all in this league. Ignore the scoring defense because his QBs were awful and probably gave up an average of 10-15 points a game by sucking so hard.

He improved each season, and did it all with terrible offenses and QBs such as Kevin Kolb, John Skelton, Ryan Lindley, Brandon Weeden, Brian Hoyer, and Jason Campbell. So, like I said, ignore the scoring defense ranks. Those are all worse QBs than Locker/Fitzpatrick if you can believe that.

It's also important to note that he was the Steelers secondary coach from 2004-2010... all of Polamalu's prime years.

He'll be a great coach for us. Unfortunately, he won't last long because he's bound to become a HC soon.

Doesn't sound like much has moved on this front. We have permission to interview Butler but sounds like he won't leave the Steelers. Let's get Horton!

    What?

According to Post-Gazette Steelers Writer Gerry Dulac, the move for Butler to interview in Tennessee was “scuttled for undisclosed reasons,” leaving Browns Defensive Coordinator and former Steelers assistant Ray Horton as the front runner to land the job. link
