Titans General Manager Ruston Webster indicated on Tuesday the team plans to give quarterback Jake Locker another chance to prove himself in 2014.

Locker has missed 14 of 32 potential starts because of injuries. He remains under contract through 2014, before an expensive option is scheduled to kick in during May. While the Titans aren’t expected to pick up the option — expected to be valued in the $13 million range — Webster made it sound like Locker would be in line to fight for his starting spot.

“I think that’s something we’ll continue to discuss and go through,’’ Webster said. “But I would anticipate Jake having a good chance to do that.”

Locker said via text he’s looking forward learning from new head coach Ken Whisenhunt, who has worked with quarterbacks like Ben Roethlisberger, Kurt Warner and Philip Rivers.

“I’m excited about the hire and looking forward to having the opportunity to work with coach Whisenhunt,’’ Locker said. “He has always had very successful offenses and I look forward to learning from him.”

Webster was non-commital when asked about the future of running back Chris Johnson, however. Johnson is scheduled to make $8 million in 2014. The running back told The Tennessean last week he’d rather play elsewhere if the team couldn’t find ways to use him “better” with a new head coach.

“We just got a new coach,’’ Webster said when asked about Johnson. “Those are things that we have to talk through, and we’ll do all that. I have been totally focused on this process and getting it done as fast as we could; doing that but coming away with a quality coach, which we did.”

Well maybe whiss is smart enough to know that cj1yd is no longer a Feature back. But instead only a situational player that requires perfect blocking or route running schemes for him to be effective.

Locker...... He has what it takes. Can whiss get him protected? Thats the question.

    We shall see.

I think it's interesting that Caldwell broke down all of Stafford's throws (and other QB's of teams he interviewed for) and even watched film with Stafford during the 'interview.' Meanwhile, Whisenhunt came here without KNOWING whether or not Locker is gonna be THE GUY next season.

As I've said before, I think they will give Locker one more chance since he played quite well WHEN he was healthy so MAYBE just MAYBE we already have a franchise QB. In the meantime, we need a viable backup that we can win with if Locker goes down. As much as Whisenhunt is gonna evaluate Locker, he and Ruston are gonna do the same with Fitz and Wilson.

As for CJ, I think we'll see Whisenhunt look at tape and talk to Ruston about how he thinks he fits the offense and Ruston will decide if that's worth $8mil. These personel moves will be Whisenhunt and Ruston working together (or Ruston working by himself since Whisenhunt has no control over the cap and stuff).

Caldwell's team did not make the playoffs, therefore he had time to look at film.

Great point. Caldwell has been freed up for 3 weeks. Whisenhunt just stopped playing a few days ago.

Well, lets remember too....Stafford was actually on the field as well...making a lot more throws to study. Locker's tape is more limited and personally I think Whisenhunt has a stronger opinion than he is stating in these early interviews.

What's he going to do....first time up to the mic say "Locker is not the guy and we will be drafting QB in the first round"??

Yeah. I thought we had learned from our Fisher days that you can't trust a word a head coach says on the microphone.

There is no benefit to him showing his cards now.

You can only protect a running qb so much. There is nothing worse than a running QB who is made of glass!

You're right about running qb's, but i dont see jake that way. He is pass first usually.

He could use time in the gym no doubt.
