After we defeated the Houston Texans in Week 17, many of us wondered what the future would hold. Had Mike Munchak done enough to save his job? A few hoped he had, most of us did not. Black Monday came and a handful of teams fired their head coaches. No word from the Titans. We waited, day after day after day. Still no news. Finally, Thursday arrived. Word came that Mike Munchak was heading to Houston on Friday to have a meeting with Tommy Smith and Ruston Webster. Most assumed Munchak was safe considering the delay in decision. Sometime Friday night, it was reported that the Titans were planning to keep Munchak. Most everyone, including myself took this as he was coming back. We spent Friday night angry at Tommy Smith's decision, saying it was just more of the same. But as Saturday rolled around, a shocker occurred. Chris Mortenson reported Munchak had been fired. The board erupted in happiness. The Titans say they were planning to bring Munchak back. IMO, they knew they were making it so hard on him, he would leave. A "nice" way of firing him. Ruston Webster even said it was time to make a change.
Our attention quickly shifted to who would be our next head coach. Again, Smith and Webster were being criticized for taking too long to fire Munchak. We would be too far behind to land a good coach. Names such as Dan Quinn and Rich Bissacia were mentioned as the early favorites. Neither was ever interviewed. We interviewed 4 candidates throughout the week. Mike Zimmer and Ken Whisenhunt seemed to be the top 2 choices of the fans. Webster saw after his Friday interview in San Diego, he had his man. The question was, could he land him? Sunday came, and the Chargers were eliminated, meaning Whisenhunt could be hired at anytime. Everyone assumed he was going to Detroit. Every insider report said so, until late Sunday night, when reports began to surface that the Titans were very interested. Monday came, Detroit had their plane ready to go to San Diego. Twitter was full of flight tracking reports. Tommy Smith had Mike Zimmer in Houston meeting with he and Ruston Webster, presumably to hire him in case Whisenhunt said no. The fans were going to get one of their guys. When is the last time that happened? Then word came, Whisenhunt had chosen the Titans. The Titans had landed the man most considered to be the top candidate available. Had he not, they had the 2nd best candidate waiting in the wings. Wonderfully played Ruston Webster and Tommy Smith. Seems we finally have leadership that will run this team in a professional and thoughtful way. I am excited about this organization's future with you two at the helm. A breath of fresh air has finally arrived in Nashville...

Absolutely hats off to Tommy & Ruston. They identified their man and did what it took to get them.

These guys are not content with mediocrity.

Even if the plan fails, it shows us that our front office has the balls to pay and do what it takes for the team to succeed. If the lions really wanted whisenhunt, they should have shown him the money.

Can't wait to see what Whiz does with the team, I won't care if we go 8-8 next season, as long as there's improvement. The only way now is up.

I've been saying it for a while now...I truston Ruston. This man knows how to run an organization, and is finally getting rid of all the scrubs that Reinfeldt and Bud let taint the atmosphere of the team. Not to mention he's a draft genius. I'm glad he's at the forefront of the organization and I think Tommy is letting him do his thing. I am pleasantly surprised that Tommy is putting money into the organization though. Looks like the extra cash is what helped us land Whiz. There are brighter days in our future.

All of you are going to call for their heads if we have two bad seasons.

Results before praise, gentleman. Results before praise.

I have so much faith in Ruston that if this decision backfires, I'd like him to stay. Remember, this is his first coaching hire. No GM should be allowed just one chance here IMO

The front office is worth of praise this far, because of their relentlessness in finding a viable replacement. Whisenhunt was deemed as the absolute #1 choice for Detroit, so we were not alone there.

The old titans way would have been promoting Loggains or gray to head coach. They are doing something different, and I applaud that, regardless of how it turns out.

Of course, there is no way to tell how it will work out. It's not as if we're expecting a Super Bowl in the next few seasons. We are applauding the front office for their hard effort.... Which bud chose not to make with the lazy and frankly stupid Munchak hire.

This is our first legit head coaching search we have gotten to live through. Don't rain on the parade. If reality sets in hard and ugly, so be it.

I would still not expect this team to be a division winner, regardless. But at least we have some hope.

I'll second not only the OP but the second MAJOR point that the Titans not only wanted him, but PAID $1mil MORE per year to get him. I LIKE THIS!!! Identify who you won't after interviewing several viable candidates and go after the guy you want!

Now if we can land Butler or Williams or Phillips at DC I'll be REALLY as excited for a new season as I ever have been.
