    Bio on Ken Whisenhunt

    Current position: Chargers offensive coordinator

    Age: 51

Prior to current position: He began his coaching career at Vanderbilt, where he coached the Commodores’ special teams and tight ends from 1995-97. He moved into the NFL the following year, and coached either tight ends or special teams for four teams – Ravens, Browns, Jets and Steelers — through 2003. His big break came in 2004, when he began a three-year stint as Steelers offensive coordinator. That led to a head-coaching job in Arizona, where he guided the Cardinals to a 45-51 record in six seasons.

Pros: Won a Super Bowl ring as an offensive coordinator with the Steelers in 2005, guiding second-year quarterback Ben Roethlisberger along the way. … Also took an underdog Cardinals team to the Super Bowl in 2008, and they nearly upended the favored Steelers. … Helped shape Roethlisberger into a first-year starter and top quarterback during their two years together. … Had three top-10 rushing offenses while in Pittsburgh. … Helped resurrect the career of quarterback Kurt Warner, who was thought to be done before turning in three strong seasons with the Cardinals prior to retirement. … Also had four top-10 defenses in six years in Arizona. … In one season in San Diego, has helped quarterback Phillip Rivers bounce back. Rivers completed 69.5 percent of his passes for 4,478 yards this season, with 32 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions. … In one year, Whisenhunt improved the Chargers’ overall offensive ranking from 31st to 5th, and the passing attack jumped from 24th to 4th. … In his 10 years as either an offensive coordinator or head coach, he’s produced four top-10 passing offenses. … Chargers first-year wide receiver Keenan Allen had more than 1,000 receiving yards this season and oft-maligned running back Ryan Matthews produced a career-best 1,255 rushing yards.

Cons: Struggled in Arizona following the retirement of Warner, as the Cardinals went just 18-30 over three seasons. … Was unable to develop a consistent winner in the post-Warner era among a cast of quarterback misfits that included Derek Anderson, John Skelton, Kevin Kolb and Max Hall. … Things ended particularly poorly for Whisenhunt and the Cardinals in 2011, as they lost nine straight games and 11 of 12 to finish the season. … Might prefer a veteran QB to work with after his success with Warner and Rivers.

The Titans plan to interview Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer for their head coaching vacancy.

Zimmer is in his 20th season as an NFL coach and in his sixth with the Bengals as defensive coordinator. The Bengals finished the season ranked third in the NFL in total defense, and was in the top five in rushing (5th), passing (5th) and points allowed (5th). He’s expected to interview with the Titans this week.

He interviewed with the Dolphins and Bucs two years ago and with the Browns last year. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Vikings are also interested in interviewing Zimmer.

Zimmer has a good reputation around the NFL. Prior to joining the Bengals in 2008, he served as defensive coordinator with the Cowboys (2000-06) and Falcons (2007).

The Titans have already requested permission to talk to Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden and Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt.
