Must be an American thing. I never have associated it with that. Actually the word comes from India. The "Thuggees" were gangs that roamed the Indian countryside and killed, then robbed travelers. The word was shortened by the British to "Thug" and used to describe violent criminals and roustabouts.

Anymore on this topic should be in taboo

For those interested in the tale of the tape:

    Brandon Marshall: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandon_Marshall#Legal_troubles

On March 26, 2007, Marshall was arrested in the Highlands Ranch suburb of Denver on suspicion of domestic violence after his girlfriend reported that following a domestic dispute, Marshall prevented a taxi she was in from leaving his house.Charges from the incident were later dismissed on May 25, 2007, after Marshall completed anger management counseling.

In the early morning of October 22, 2007, Marshall was arrested in the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area at the intersection of 14th and Blake St. for driving under the influence of alcohol. A trial was scheduled for September 16, but Marshall instead agreed to a plea bargain four days earlier; he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of driving while ability impaired. He was sentenced to one-year probation and 24 hours of community service.

On early Sunday, March 11, 2012, two days before his trade to the Bears, Marshall was accused of hitting a woman in the face at a New York club and being involved in a melee. The New York Post stated that Marshall, his wife and some friends were at Marquee when a brawl ensued, and Marshall punched the woman below her left eye, although he may have been attempting to hit the woman's friends. The investigation later ended after a lack of evidence of Marshall's role in the incident.

    Brandon Meriweather: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandon_Meriweather#Controversies

On July 21, 2006 Meriweather was involved in a shooting incident when teammate Willie Cooper was shot in the buttocks. In self-defense, Meriweather returned fire and shot at the unidentified shooters three times. Meriweather was not charged with a crime because his gun was owned legally.

During the Miami-FIU brawl on October 14, 2006, Meriweather was seen stomping multiple times on several Florida International players on the ground. Meriweather was ultimately suspended by the ACC and Miami for his role in the incident. It is believed that his actions during the brawl and the shooting incident may have caused his draft stock to slip.

On April 25, 2012, Meriweather was arrested in Arlington County, Virginia, on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to a press account. Meriweather was initially stopped for speeding on westbound I-66, according to Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck, who also said that officers detected an odor of alcohol on his breath and performed a field sobriety test, which Meriweather failed. Sternbeck further stated that Meriweather refused a breathalyzer test, was arrested and spent the night in the Arlington County jail. According to the press account, "Police say Meriweather claimed he was driving home from a club in D.C., but couldn’t remember the name of the club."

Nobody is going to publically support domestic violence.

    However....
    1) Brandon Merriweather is stupid for talking about planning to go after knees, even if he was just trying to make his point.
    2) Brandon Merriweather has no defense in this argument, so he attacks other things.
    3) He should be careful about what he says, since there are probably a lot of guys with a domestic violence incident, many of whom will be in a position to cut block him.
    4) It is probably borderline libel.

Merriweather is not dirty. There's a line between dirty and aggressive. Big hits are part of the game. And IG he can't hit high, then he has to hit low which will cause torn acl (Dustin Keller) or fracture leg (Randell Cobb) he's not dirty , Finnegan is dirty. Put their tapes on and watch Finnegan, that's dirty

And your clearly one of those guys who cries after a big hit. Sean Taylor is turning his grave by players being suspended for big hits. I'm a Hurricane fan, I watch Merriweather. That's why all these wrs are saying they want hit high and not low.

Has he yet? Cause I can name a hand full of guys who have seriously hurt someone, I don't think he has. You can say he's going to seriously hurt someone about anyone in the league. Big hits are part of the game. Its seriously couple years away till its national flag football league.
