Like it or not, running backs Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson will be mentioned in sentences until their respective careers are over, and probably long after.

Since 2008, they’re ranked No.1 and No.2 in the NFL in rushing yards. Peterson, who entered the NFL as a rookie with the Vikings in 2007, has the edge over Johnson in the past five years – 7,508 yards to 6,888.

Johnson beat Peterson to the 2,000-yard mark in 2009 with the Titans, when he tallied 2,006. In a bounce back season, Peterson piled up 2,097 yards a year ago.

“You could say it’s a good rivalry,’’ Johnson said. “I’m sure every year I want to have the rushing title and I know that’s somebody I have to go through him to get it, and I am sure he knows he has to go through somebody.”

Neither player is expected to play much, if at all, in Thursday’s preseason game in Minneapolis. Johnson said he has a lot of respect for Peterson, and he’s kept up with him during his career.

“I like his game and like watching him play,’’ Johnson said. “He is a power guy, but he can also hit a home run.”

The only reason Peterson has an edge in rushing yards is because he played one more year than Chris Johnson.

Both Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson are among the six players in history who have rushed over 2,000 yards in a season. Both are saying they think they can do it again.Chris Johnson holds the all time record for most total yards from scrimmage in a single season with 2,509 yards.Johnson also holds the record for the most longest runs with six different runs in his career over eighty yards.Barry Sanders did hold the record with three runs over eighty yards.Peterson has the most 50+ yard runs in a single season with seven and also the most yards rushing in a single game with 296.Johnson has sixteen different runs of 50 yards or more in his career. Both are easily the most dominant RB's of the last decade.

They said he has the edge in the past 5 years. Both players played all 5. AP even lost a few games to injury. CJ shared carries, and that has a lot to do with it. If we're taking last decade, Ladanian Tomlinson belongs in the conversation. He still holds the TD record

I don't even care what your list is... AP and Arian Foster are the only two real cases

Absolutely love your post. But AP made it seven over 2k. Stupid criticism but I'm pretty buzzed up from pdm night in Knox and I wanted to try to sound smart with my google aid for once haha. I may catch some flacks or this but cj's speed is unmatched at the Rb position, definitely the fastest ever. But AP is the absolute best combination of speed and power for a RB we've seen for a long time if not ever. At least in my life that I can remember. Even if these stats do have APs extra year we can't take away from anything these incredible players have done. Both teams are incredibly lucky to have these players. Trying to be extremely unbiased and give an honest opinion so I hope we can all try to see both sides. This will be ongoing argument for years. We can only wait And see who wants it more.
