I'd rather just get my dog as a pup for cheap and save him from the local pound.

That's why I don't understand it... unless they are renting out these dogs for super cheap, there's no point. Buy your pets. If you end up not liking them, sell them or give them away.

I'd hope that when and if you get attached to the dog after renting, you'd be able to buy it and not have to return it, at least?

    Nah. This is perfect.

You should be able to rent them for a day. Go to a park... chill with it-- get girls with the conversation-starter known as dog, and then return it once you seal the deal.

    Genius.

...now if only they had rent-a-kids for the same purposes.

    That's borderline inhumane.

    They're dogs.

If they're ungrateful for the time you give them while rented- give them the "There are dogs at Michael Vick's that'd LOVE to be where you are right now. You sit and think about that." talk.

They're pets. A part of your family. You don't rent pets.

Anyone who has a domesticated animal for over a month and doesn't become attached probably shouldn't have a pet to begin with.

I don't doubt it will make the guy some dough, but I do not like the idea one bit. I'm a big animal lover, and the idea of "renting pets" simply doesn't sit well with me.

I read the full article and I don't buy into the "problems" this service is supposedly solving. Seems like a pure money-grab disguised as a much-needed service. And I just don't see why anyone who isn't rich would opt to pay $59-$138/month for a dog. And if you are rich I don't see why this service would really interest you anyway. Just pay for the dog, it's food, and medical expenses (when they arise).

My main problem though is this... I don't like the "trial period" aspect of it. When you buy/adopt/rescue a dog, you are making a commitment. Too many people fail to realize this, and it's a big reason why we have so many dogs in shelters in the first place. IMO this "service" has the potential for a ton of animal turnover/re-homing, which isn't good for the animals (particularly dogs). The simple truth is some people just SHOULDN'T have pets. If you're overly worried about regretting your decision to get a pet then you probably aren't ready. I fear the "easy out" of this business model will have some people constantly searching for the "perfect dog" and/or giving up on them at the first sign of trouble.

When I (as an adult) got my first dog, he was very rowdy, destructive and annoying. There were several times I thought "I've made a huge mistake". But most of his issues were my fault for not being as knowledgeable about dog training and behavior as I should have been. I got serious about training and in a couple months he was a completely different dog. Obedient (most of the time) and a total sweetheart. If I would've given him up it would've been one of the biggest mistakes of my life. And if I had an "easy out" those first few months it's a possibility that I would have.

Maybe I'm just a big ole softy when it comes to pets. But like I said, it just doesn't sit well with me and I would never support or endorse this business model.

Wow, I didn't mean to write a book or anything.
