I remember back in the days of MySpace my pals and I would make "fake" online people and try to trick other kids at our school. This is literally the same thing, but times a zillion. ND is stating that Te'o didn't know about it and got hoax'd. But, Te'o has been on record stating that he was on the phone with her every night and met her in Stanford... therefore he had to know about it.

Te'o issued a statement Tuesday afternoon:

"This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.

"To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.

"It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother's death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life.

"I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been.

"In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was.

"Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I'm looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft."

That's his excuse. But plenty of people are saying that he told reporters he actually met her. As soon as someone can dig up proof that he said this, it will show that he was in on the hoax from the beginning and not just a victim.

    We'll see, I guess.

That's actually not too hard to believe. Horrible plan, but not unbelievable. But then why go through all the dramatics instead of simply saying something like "We broke up"? Why call even more attention to it by saying she died? I still say there's some form of psychological issue going on to go that far with it.

However, if that were the case he could possibly parlay this into a positive by being the first openly gay NFL player.

It would not surprise me one bit that they assumed he has met her and they have no proof of him saying it.

The thing about Manti's defense is, I just don't see the endgame for such an elaborate hoax from the perpetrators' perspective. I mean, he claimed to talk to her every single night, all night long while she was in the hospital. Even falling asleep on the phone with her.

What would cause a person, or group of people, to dedicate SO much time into this 'hoax'? What were they getting out of it? Just a good laugh? Not to mention, you'd have to be TRULY evil to sit there and carry on a hoax like that on a daily basis, knowing you are crushing someone's soul.

His story is just very hard for me to believe, for many reasons.

You can technically sue for anything. He knowlingly deceived people and they gave their money to a third party because of his deception. Criminally, its loosely theft by deception but I don't think it is a criminal offense unless someone digs up more dirt. Civilly though, those people could have given their hard earned money to a charity in remembrance of someone who was actually a real person... So yeah, you can sue someone because they lied to you and it caused your financial distress.
