Don't get me wrong, I'd love for a trade-down to happen, believe me. Basically I call for that every year, we need to "play" the draft a lot more than we do, instead of just sitting happily where we are.

I've been watching this team draft since around 1986... Oiler days obviously, and I can think of maybe a few trade downs. So, the history is not encouraging. I do recall we played the draft brilliantly when we got Eddie George, I think we traded down twice in the first that year. I'd love to see more of that happening.

You don't pay attention then to the other 6 rounds if you say we don't "play" the draft.

Last year we traded the 145th pick for Miami's 155th pick, and their 227th pick.
Then we traded our 211th pick to Minnesota for a higher pick in the 6th round this year.

We've gotten some of our better players by moving up in past drafts. SenDerrick Marks, Alterraun Verner & Jared Cook just to name a few are guys we've gotten by "playing" the draft.

Is the Alabama offense better than ours? Their O-line is solid. If we could get the 2 of those guys, Warmack and Jones, it would impact all facets of our game. Better run game, leads to play action and more time off the field for defense. Thing is there's a good chance 20 other teams are thinking the same.

Don’t forget though, this coaching staff prides themselves on being able to “coach up” talent. I honestly think that they see the talent Warmack has, but think if there’s a guy in the 2nd or 3rd with potential, they’d rather take that guy and coach him up and not waste a first round pick on a guard when we have so many holes on defense.

Star, Jarvis Jones, or Mingo could come in and immediately make our defense better. They’re blue chip guys that don’t come around too often. Though Warmack might be the best guard prospect to come through in years, he doesn’t, as Munch has said “make plays or touch the ball.”

Star would make us better because the QB wouldn't have the extra time to step up in the pocket. Mingo and jones would be silly speed rushers that wouldn't change the dynamic at all.

So you're ok with the lack of pass rush we have? And you think a couple of extra sacks per game wouldn't effect us at all?

We had 39 sacks for the entire year. 14 were against the Jags. Take those away and that's 25 sacks over 14 games. You're really ok with this? You're ok with Brady, Rodgers, Luck, and Rivers to have all the time in the world to pick us apart when our secondary already needs help?

DE might be our thinnest position overall. At least on the o-line we'll have some guys returning. After Wimbley and Morgan who do we have? If they go down, you're comfortable with Solomon getting a majority of the playing time? I'm not saying go DE because it's our biggest need, obviously take the BPA, but there will be some stud rushers there at 10 that could really help our defense.

I've posted the number of hurries we got a few times on here. We had pressure dude, sacks are great but our pressure was GOOD. The way the secondary effects the d line and vice versa is more important that a rotational player that you think would change the dynamic. It wouldn't.

The defense is a domino effect of front end and back end. Our DEs are both top 10 in QB hurries... Top ten... Both of them. The problem is the QB had openings in the secondary to get the ball out quicker than your "precious" sacks could happen. Not because we didnt get pressure. The other thing is the DT. If you have a DT that can push the pocket, the QB can't step up out of the way of DEs coming around the edge.

So imagine if you get pressure on the edge but there is a large pocket in the middle for the QB to step up into... And the soft zone coverage isn't forcing the QB to hold the ball... Easy completions.

Now imagine that you get the same situation but the QB can't step up because the DT has blown up the middle of the line... Now the DEs have a much better chance of getting that sack. Plus the QB has to force throws or throw of his back foot because his mechanics are being messed with.

Another DE doesn't chance the dynamic of the over all Defense. If you change the secondary and they hold coverage longer and better, the DEs also get more time to get to that QB... It's a system.

I agree about having another DT but what constitutes a hurry? I'm not knocking the stat, I really like Morgan now and Wimbley was pretty good (he just sucks against the run).

Once again agree about needing a DT but Jones and Mingo aren't "silly". Is Aldon Smith silly? JJ Watt?

Pressure. Forcing the qb to either step up in the pocket or release the ball before expecting.
