This is exactly why I want a big time DT in the middle of our D. It can cover up SOO much. Remember, even Griffin was a probowler behind Fat Al. We have never found a big time DT to replace Fat Al, and we have never been the same since. I like Casey and Martin, but they will never be the dominant force at DT that we need, but they will be DAMN good if they are paired up with one.

And I like Te'o, but we already have a good LB corps, and as good as Ayers-McCarthy-Brown are behind our current DL, they would be MONSTERS behind a big time DT. It would also free up our DEs some to rush the passer better. There is not a more impactful position on the defense than the DT IMO

I really think a playmaker at DT fixes a lot of our problems (ie pass rush, secondary problems).

You win games by controlling the trenches, and we have not done that on either side of the ball this year. Lets use a 1st to round pick to gain that control back on the D.

The only concern I have is how we invested in defensive tackle over the last couple years with Casey, Martin, Klug. They will be great as rotation players beside Star or Hankins, I just hope the front office won't shy away from getting one of these guys if they are available.

Like you said having a big time defensive tackle is going to keep lineman off our our linebackers letting them make plays. If that leads to more pressure also the secondary will improve. Hopefully we make the right decision.

If we switched to a 3-4 guys like Casey, Martin and Klug would play DE with Star/Hankins at NT.

Why do we need a 3-4 defense? Correct me if I'm wrong but the Bronco's still run a 4-3 defense and are playing good defense. Their is no reason why Ayers can't play at the same level as Von Miller and be an effectice pass rusher in a 4-3. A dominate defensive tackle in the 4-3 will do wonders for us with our young talented linebacking core.

I think we could go either way with a dominant DT (Star/Hankins). Obviously that fills a big void in the 4-3, but if we have a guy that can play NT in the 3-4, move Casey/Martin outside and put Wimbley in at OLB moving ZB inside with McCarthy. Ayers as a 3-4 OLB would be pretty scary IMO. I don't think one style is any better than the other, just depends on the schemes and personell you have to run it.

I would perfer to stay with the base 4-3, and mix the 3-4 in often to keep the O guessing and I think grabbing a big DT allows us to do this with our current personell. A true 'hybrid' D that we keep hearing about but never seeing. But our 'fall back' would always be the 4-3 since that is where the players have the most exp playing

I love both Martin and Casey. I like Martin more though. Both can be legit, but you can never have too many DTs... rotation rotation rotation. If we do go 34, all 3 can start. Casey/Martin both my solid DEs. Star at NT.

The more I think about it, the more I like this. Gets your best players on the field, while at the same time getting our scrub DEs off it (except Wimbley moves to OLB obviously) ... my only worry would be lack of depth. We would have to sign a FA NT. Also who would back up Casey/Martin if they were to go down, or who is going to rotate in there? Can Klug be that guy? Morgan? ... what if Wimbley goes down? Do we have anyone else that can play the OLB in a 3-4? I'm not sure.

Obviously some of those problems can be fixed in draft/FA. But I don't want to create more holes at the same time. I still like the idea of going 3-4 if we can answer those questions

3-4 DE: Casey, Martin, Klug, Morgan -- Depth OK
    3-4 NT: Star, FA
3-4 OLB: Ayers, Wimbley, FA, 4th Rounder
3-4 ILB: McCarthy, Brown, Shaw, FA

So basically we'd use a 1st on Star, 4th on OLB depth, and 3 (cheap) FAs to complete our switch.

3-4 front really is the best thing for us, I've said it 32 times now, but I'll say it til I'm blue in the face.
