The combination of a sturdy offensive line and quarterback Matt Hasselbeck’s quick release proved highly effective at avoiding sacks in 2011 for the Titans.

Tennessee surrendered just 24 sacks all season, tied for second-best in the league. Hasselbeck was taken down just 19 times in 518 pass attempts, an average of just one sack every 27.3 attempts.

But for whatever reason, things haven’t gone so well thus far for Hasselbeck and the Titans in the sacks-allowed department. Hasselbeck has already been taken to the turf eight times in 123 pass attempts, an average one sack every 15.4 attempts.

Hasselbeck was sacked three times by Pittsburgh, twice by Minnesota and three times by Houston. But overall this season, the Titans still rank seventh in the league when it comes to sacks allowed per passing attempt.

“We shoot for two or less (sacks per game),” Hasselbeck said. “But you know, sacks can be a misleading thing. It really depends on the score of the game, how you’re calling the game, if you’re taking a lot of seven-step drops or a lot of three-step drops.

“There are situations where it’s safe to take a sack. But I don’t know … It’s an important thing in terms of field position.”

Titans coach Mike Munchak says taking a sack can sometimes be the lesser of two evils, especially considering that quarterback turnovers have resulted in three opponent touchdowns this season.

“Sometimes it’s smart to take a sack,” Munchak said. “No one’s open, nowhere to throw it, just get down and not have a bad play happen. When you can get rid of it, get rid of it, obviously.

“But (this year’s sacks) are just a combination of things. Sometimes the protection wasn’t maybe quite as good as it needed to be or the route wasn’t run the right way. I think (Hasselbeck) just didn’t want to have something bad happen.”

The Titans’ opponent this week, Buffalo, posted five sacks in a win over Arizona last Sunday.

For whatever reason things aren't going as well? I have a pretty solid theory....probably because our offensive line is a joke.

Titans have given up 11 sacks, 10th in the NFL.. pass blocking isn't an issue.

Considering we only gave up 17 all of last year (which was 2nd in the league), it is an issue.

It isn't THE issue, but it is an issue.

Hasselbeck is one of the best in the league about getting rid of the ball quickly. Anyone in the know will tell you that. Jared Allen mentioned it before the Vikings raped our souls. It is the O-Line. The O-Line is pure doo-doo.

I wasn't saying that our o-line as a whole isn't the issue... I'm saying pass protection isn't the issue... it's run blocking and the interior o-line.

We need to start drafting replacements for Roos and Stewart who are both declining... and find at least two immediate starters for the interior line.
